So I went to my local IPSC match today, after a much-too-long leave of absence (about eighteen months--why did I wait so long?!).
"Oklahoma," it is popularly believed, is Choctaw for "red dirt*;" I assure you, it actually means "red dust" and it describes the fine red crud that penetrates every nook and cranny of my pistol and magazines. The gun handled it fine; the magazines, on the other hand, didn't take so well to it.
I was shooting Metalform 10-rd mags most of the time, and they were, hands down, the most recalcitrant. The Metalform mags have a somewhat rough surface--they're almost porous, as though they were cast, and never polished out. Other mags which had a polished (or enameled) finish functioned much better.
The failure mode was common to all of them today: the top round would stick below the feed lips. If you look at a mag, the rounds sit slightly nose-up in the mag, parallel to the feed lips. Today, my rounds were sitting level, with the back of the round against the lips, and the nose in free space below the lips, apparently stuck in place by dirt on the sides of the case exterior and interior mag body (oh, how I love being an Okie).
Anyhow, my question is: what can I do about this? Is there some sort of coating I can apply to the inside of the mag body? The cases themselves were clean and properly sized, it was just my magazines that seemed "sticky."
I'm hesitant to try applying any sort of enamel or anything to the mag, for fear that I'll change the internal dimensions enough to permanently impair feeding. A Teflon (or similar) coating, thinly applied, might do the trick, I don't know.
Has anybody else ever seen this problem? Any suggestions on what to do about it?
