Mags per Gun

got 4 mags for my pistols, and averagely 6 mags for each AR (got 5 AR-15 and 30+ mags + Sig550 and Ak-47 with 4 mags each + Garand and 20 clips)

though, I do not see any situation where i would need more than 3 or 4 mags...

If I need more, the situation is sooo screwed that maybe the SHTF so bad that I would need a lot of other stuff that I don't have and cannot afford..

Well .... for rifle ~20 is OK.
I'm not sure why so many for a handgun would be necessary. I do have a lot of mags for a few handguns I have but I don't think I have as many as 10 for any one gun.

Rifles are more useful in a SHTF situation ....
pistols are good for close defense, CCW. Carrying a spare mag for a CCW is good, having 2 is better.

Just my 2 cents.

If guy shoot in compitition and single stack then a can see maybe 8 clips I have 4 for my 40cal upper and 3 for my 9mm upper for my witness. Thats enought,54 rounds of 9 and 64 in the40,more than enough for a heavy round.

More than 10-15 per is overkill. Extras are fine, but carrying more 10 magazines at a time is too heavy for practical purposes. My bugout kit has 10x30rd AK mags + 6 .45 mags, and is on the heavy side.

Are you talking "own" or carry on body?

If the former- A dozen minimum. Preferably 3-4 times that. The can be damaged/broken/lost, and you never know when a new piece of legislation will cause you grief, or a shortage of avalible products like we currently have can cause you trouble.

If the latter- If you feel it needful to carry more than 2 spares, you either shouldn't go where you're going, or you should take a squad with you.

I never understood why people have 20+ mags for their rifles. What the hell do you use them for? Range use? It's gonna take you three trips back and forth to the car to get them all to the firing line. SHTF? At a certain point in time it's got to be inefficient to drag around 20lb field bag full of magazines. Self defense? Do you expect to find yourself in a gun fight with a Mexican drug cartel? Or are you just hording the damn things, waiting for TEOTWAWKI?

I keep enough magazines to shoot 1-2 courses of fire, based on what kind of shooting I do. For instance, I shoot the AQT with my Ruger 10/22, which is a 40 round course of fire, so I have 6 x 10 round magazines for my 10/22. That's 4 mags for the course of fire, and 2 spares. I shoot IDPA with my Springfield XD, so I have 4 mags - one in the gun, 2 on the belt and a spare. I think anything beyond that is a waste of space and weight.

I want enough 30+ round, rifle mags, to last until I die, if they were banned tomorrow.

10 or 15 mags per 1911 at any one time is sufficient, for my needs.

I usually go with 10 per gun.

I overbought on AR mags though. I think I have 80 or something now. I guess I got carried away buying in bulk.

If you are one who tends to shoot a lot at the range then the more the better.
I usualy preload before I hit the range to cut down my non-shooting time.

Honestly I buy extra mags when at the end of the gunshow, I have a few extra
bucks. I have not found myself to have too many.

I don't know why, but most ranges I come across prohibit that. I've seen it down here in South Florida, and up in Burnsville, Minnesota (just outside of Minneapolis).

.cheese., no problem with that here. If an outdoor range I need to
have my slide back and pistol pointing down range on the counter if the range
is not hot. There has never been a mention of nopreloaded mags. Same with
a rifle, bolt back or some direction as the rifle not being engaged.

Indoor ranges usualy do not have a RO, but it has been some time since I
have been to an indoor range.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, how many mags per gun do you guys think is appropriate??

I'm thinking 10 per handgun and 20 per rifle, what do you think?

Thanks
matai, that what I do....

I have a minimum of 5 per handgun for collectables.
10 perhandgun for my Glocks, Sigs, and H K's
300+ mags for 7 AR's
20 for my M-14's

I'm baffled. Why would I want 20 or more mags for a Browning BAR, a Rem 700, a Cooper Model 57, a Sako Finnfire or, say, a Remington 541-S. What's the point? Seems like 2 for the field and a couple of spares or so would do for a very long time. Like a lifetime.

I don't pay by the hour when I'm shooting at a range, so taking breaks, talking to folks and reloading is part of the routine.

Seriously? I've NEVER heard of that, and I belong to some pretty conservative clubs. I keep ALL my magazines loaded.

3 per hand gun and 7 per rifle, screw the ease of multiple mags at the range this is my bare minimium for duty carries. For Pistol 1 in the gun and 2 in the mag pouch. for my M4 1 in the gun and 3 in each mag pouch. That is the minimium I will have per gun, of course more is always better.

I have just two mags 10 rounds each. (Double stack kind)

I will buy a few more as budget permits for the rest of the year.

20 bangbangs is plenty. Anything more than that according to Murphy means you are up the creek without a paddle.

I believe that 10-15 magazines per gun is all you will need in your life time. Of course, guys that shoot hundreds of rounds every month and those guys who take the shooting courses are going to have higher demands and abuse them more, but I can't see the average person going through (breaking it) more than 1 magazine in the entire duration of ownership.

I see a lot of guys that have 100's of AR-15 mags, and sure that's fine, but what are you seriously going to do with a couple hundred magazines (besides sell them)? I think a lot of guys get caught up in all the hubub and confuse what they think they need, what they want, and what they actually need.

I could certainly see this as a good reason to have a bunch of magazines.

I tend to take the Lula and reload a magazine, allowing the gun to cool some and take a moment of break while replacing targets etc and eyeball the range to see how the other folks are making out.

I have seen some folks come, sit down, close the curtain and swim in brass an hour later.

I am freaked over these posts! I really did not expect to be this surpirsed. I have 2 to 4 mags for my pistols, 4 for my .22's, 6 for the AK & 6 for the SKS's; + 20 loaded stripper clips; they are only loaded because I was bored & why not. But 80 mags? 80? Really? 2400 ready rounds? Assuming you survived to use all of them, I doubt the AR would w/o a cooldown....

I own too many sem-autos to have 6-10 per gun. It would take a lot of work to come up with even a storage system to keep them straight. For some handguns I just have the 2 that came with the gun.
