I am getting ready to leave Wyoming for warmer climates this winter. I've got an H&R 38 S&W that needs some work on the recoil shield. My dilemma is would it be legal for me to leave just the frame here and have it repaired, taking the barrel and cylinder with me to Arizona. Then when the recoil shield is repaired can it be mailed (like a Black Powder gun) to me or do I have to receive it through an FFL?

It seems that if I can order parts online and the frame is just a part, I should be able to mail it right???

Well yes and no, see the frame is the gun as far as the law is concerned

Not a 100% on the law on this I would think if a gun smith is doing to work he can tell you what needs to be done

If you don't have an FFL, you can't MAIL a handgun (and the frame is considered the handgun) anywhere. Only FFL's are legal to use the USPS to mail handguns.

A licensed gunsmith can return your gun to you (and the frame is considered the gun) at your doorstep via FEDEX or UPS after repair or replacement.

If you leave the frame in Wyoming for repair, you'll need to pick it up in Wyoming when it is done.

If you leave it in Wyoming for repair and wish it sent to you in the warmer climes, it'll have to go through a t-shirt-and-shorts-wearing FFL.

However, if you ship it via FedUPS (or other common carrier) from the warmer climes for repair, it can be shipped directly back to you.

It's all in the multiple stickies that nobody reads.
