I'm considering escaping Massachusetts to go up to Maine, where my wife's family is from.

I've been over the packing.org website, but the info for Miane is spotty. Can anyone tell me some of the CCW rules- specifically where you CAN'T carry?

Also, any good ranges in the Portland area?

Thanks!

Erk, never mind, there it was on packing.org, right in front of my face. Looks like schools and courts are off limits, and bars, if posted. Sound right?

Still looking for a place to shoot in the Portland area though. :)

Jamz you are correct schools, courts and bars are NO CARRY AREAS!
Permits are relatively easy to obtain, most Organized Police Departments
can and will issue, some don't and defer to the State Police Licensing
Division. Municipal permits are a form type, much like a Maine Hunting
License ( if you've ever seen one) State Issued (SP) are Photo "drivers
license style.
Most towns and cities are ok with carry with a permit, BUT, Portland
PD is'nt real happy with them either way. The Chief down there
is from Philadelphia and make life hard in his baileywick.
Carry without permit is easy if your only carrying while hunting as no
CCW is required in the field, BUT, NO LOADED weapons on or in
vehicles (and I do mean on, leaning or laying against or on the vehicle
itself, a good many folks have been sighted by wardens for violations).
Open carry is legal,BUT,"Definetly NOT" worththe hassels! Transport
without permit is ok, BUT, Must Be Unloaded, in plain sight or in an
area not accessible by driver or passengers. A further note for any
other weapon (without CCW) transport in Un-Organized Townships
on Sunday weapons must be in a case or disassembled.
Hope that this is some help.

SNUG is right about Portland. Not a gun friendly place. I have been disarmed in Portland, simply going to a concert. The police were patting people down upon entering the Cumberland County Civic Center, and they confiscated my carry weapon. I did get it back, but they gave me a hard time. My lesson learned was, when in Portland, use deep concealment. I can't help you with ranges in Portland. I live a hundred miles from there.

Concealed is no problem, but if I do live on Portland, I assume they will issue? They can't not issue, or issue and restrict to target shooting or some such, can they?
