Article from the Chicago Tribune website:
I was going to post this under 'ATTENTION ALL LANDLORDS'.
I am a landlord, and this article started to strike home with me.
However, upon closer review, there is no mention of the victim being a landlord.
For me, as a landloard - if you hear a noise from a vacant apartment, call 911. I am not clearing an apartment by myself.
As a tenant, I would call the landlord. No answer, call 911.

A 22-year-old man was shot and killed early Saturday morning after checking out noises coming from a vacant unit in his apartment building, police said.
Pierre Moore, 22, of the 2200 block of South Springfield Avenue, was home around 1 a.m. when he heard noises in first-floor unit that was supposed to be empty, said Chicago Police Officer Laura Kubiak, a department spokeswoman.
When he went down to the apartment and knocked on the door, an unknown male opened the door and shot Moore, Kubiak said.
Moore was pronounced dead at the Cook County medical examiner's office at 5:00 a.m. Saturday. Harrison Area detectives were investigating the incident Saturday morning, Kubiak said.
