Man who shot at cop, killed self ID'd
A Billings man who police said fired a pistol at an officer before shooting himself was identified Monday as Jay Trottier.
Police Lt. Joe Bryce said Trottier, 48, died Sunday in a house on Broadwater Avenue of a gunshot wound to the head. Police continued to investigate the shooting, but Bryce said investigators believe that Trottier killed himself after firing once at Officer Shane Winden.
Winden was not injured and returned to work Monday, Bryce said.
The shooting happened at about 3:40 p.m., when Winden was sent to check on a disturbance at 1736 Broadwater Ave. When Winden arrived, he saw a man breaking through the front door of the residence, police said.
Winden went to the door, but could not get it to open all the way, Bryce said. He put his head through the opening to look inside and saw a man on the other side of the room holding a gun, Bryce said.
Winden was backing away from the door when a single shot was fired in his direction. The bullet from a .357-caliber revolver hit the door frame. Winden took cover behind a minivan parked in the driveway while calling for help.
Before other officers arrived, Bryce said, Winden heard another gunshot from inside the house, followed by screams. Trottier's estranged wife came outside and told Winden that Trottier had shot himself. Winden told the woman to stay outside while he went inside the house, where he found two teenage girls and told them to leave. Winden found Trottier's body in a bedroom, Bryce said.
Winden did not fire his weapon during the incident, Bryce said.
Bryce said Trottier had recently moved out of the Broadwater house. He was not known to have any criminal record.
Winden has been a Billings police officer for about 7 months, Bryce said.
