Any ideas where I could get a Mannlicher stock for a Winchester Ranger? It's a long action - 30-06.

I am pretty sure it's just a Model 70 with a cheap stock. I really like the rifle, but I do not like the stock. I figure if I am going to spend the $$, I might as well get a stock I really like.

Richards Micro-Fit stocks look nice. Their (90%) "semi-finished" stocks leave plenty of wood for you to shift dimensions to match your size and allow you to inlet for almost any barrel you wish. Their wood is good, you really get what you pay for and the prices are right. Having them install a quality recoil pad is cost effective and it's done right too.

You can get the correct mannlicher steel tip cap from Brownell's gunsmithing catalog. Mine was a standard "Uncle Mikes" item, IIRC.

A .30-06 carbine can be punishing. Don't cut the barrel shorter than maybe 20" or the muzzle blast will take your ears off, muffs or not. (That's experience speaking!)

This is true.

That's why I always use some sort of extra recoil pad on the butt, and I sacrificed one of those cold-drink, closed cell foam "cozy cups" across the comb of the stock when I'm benchresting the '06. Just cut it down the side and remove the bottom-part. Use the foam as a "blanket" over the comb of the stock. You can even splurge on three or four rubber bands to hold it in place while you get your zero. The difference is night-and-day... as in you'll think its night, 'cause you are seeing stars if you let the comb of that stock whack you in the cheekbone while firing from the bench.

Double-up your ear protection too, when shooting the big boomer from the bench.

i would go with great american before richards for a mannlicher stock. they seem to have better lines to me but i also think 95% of the mannlicher stocks i've seen were an abomination. most of them are way to thick, the grip is to closed & dont transition well from the receiver area forward. the ones that get it right are spectacular
