Greetings!

The LGS has a very nice wood stock Winchester Model 70 Ranger in .30-06 for $350. It has the metal follower and trigger guard, predating some of the plastic short cuts. It comes with a cheap scope, but I would scrap it anyway since I would be looking at using it for a general open sight gun on the property. That seems like a good price, what do you think of the Ranger? Please comment.

Thanks,

Hunter

You are going to have a hard time finding an equivalent new rifle at that price. Overall, I like the M70, including the push feed, and if you give up a little finish or a little bluing, so what, don't you plan to scratch it anyway?

It will shoot and function just as well as the more polished versions.

Decent price on a decent gun.

It is a Model 70 without the walnut. If I was in the market for a good rifle for $350 I wouldn't hesitate to grab a Ranger in good condition. I had one come thru the shop last year. It went for $400 online. Had a $20 Simmons on it.

I have a Ranger that I bought new from the local Service Merchandise for $219.95 in 1989. I wonder if you adjusted that for inflation what that would work out to in todays dollars. At the time I didn't really know that much about guns but all the older guys I worked with used model 70's in .30-06 so that was what I bought. The Model 70 purists don't like the post 64's because they are push feed but it will print Remington core lokt ammunition into a three shot one hole group at 100 yards off a home made lead sled type rest. The Ranger is the same rifle as what Winchester called their standard rifle only in a plain birch stock. I don't know if that is a good price but mine has been a good rifle.
