Does anyone know of a gunsmith that will roll stamp or re mark factory markings on a S&W barrel?

If so please post or mail me direct.

I have a Model 27 barrel that I am putting on a 38/44 Outdoorsman. I want the 357 Magnum buffed off and 38 S&W Special CTG stamped or put back in it's place. Then reblue the barrel.

Thanks

Bruce

I suppose many gunsmiths would have a set of hand stamps that could do that, but the job would not look anything like the factory marking. Not a big problem though; even if someone did read the barrel, .357 won't fit in the cylinder.

Welcome, Bruce. Glad to have your here. Have you checked with Smith and Wesson? You may need to find a gunsmith who specialises in restoration work, and is skilled in refreshing old markings. Might be expensive.

The original markings were rollstamped. the stamp was in the form of a wheel, and it left the markings as it rolled down the barrel.

There are two ways the markings can be replaced. One is by using a machine called a panagraph, and the other is to hand engrave it. Do a search on Turnbull Resterations for one such firm.

Incidentally, Numrich/The Gun Parts Corporation has original .38/44 Outdoorsman barrels (in the white) that are correctly marked but need to be fitted to the frame and finished.

Thanks for the responses. I contacted S&W yesterday. The person I spoke to was kind of clueless. What I need to do is find out how to contact someone in the finishing room. I hate to send the barrel to them only to get it sent back. Guess it all depends on who you talk too. I found a guy in WA state yesterday who does re-lettering, restoration work. If S&W won't do it I'll turn to him. I doubt I will use Turnbull. Both experiences with him have left me wishing I had kept the gun "as is".

The fellow I found is at:

I'll post when I find something out from S&W.

The barrels at Gun Parts are Heavy Duty barrels with fixed sights. I have found in collecting 38/44's many shops and parts dealers get the Heavy Duty and Outdoorsman confused. I have several of those barrels. They are decent but not like new. Mine have several dings that may or may not polish out. But for someone who needs a new barrel on a Heavy Duty they are just the trick.

Bruce:

The original pre-war .38/44 Outdoorsman revolver had a "pencil barrel" that was identical to the one used on the Heavy Duty except the front sight blade was milled off and the lug slotted for a pined-in blade. Gun Parts has the Heavy Duty barrel (#397170), and it's easier to get the front sight modified then to get markings recut.

However I note you are using a .357 Magnum barrel, so I presume you have the later post-war .38/44 Outdoorsman. Gun Parts has (or had) a 95% finished barrel, in the white, originally intended for the model 23 and earlier .38/44 revolvers using the ribbed barrel (#397040). I can't say they aren't sold out, but they did have them because one is sitting in my parts box right now.
