And I’m aware of all the bad press that Marlin ran into before and after they were acquired by Remington. This one is in like new condition and came with a Cabela’s caliber specific 30-30 scope. It had been sitting in my LGS used rack for quite some time with no takers. Someone had thoughtfully installed a 1/2” recoil pad on the butt stock bringing the length of pull up to a shade over 13”... roughly the same as the model 94 Winchester which suits me very well. The serial number has the MR prefix and the rifle has a laminated stock. Pretty sure it’s a “Remlin”. Have to admit I was a bit leery due to the well known quality problems. I recently saw a very good segment on American Rifleman TV about Marlin and the capital improvements that Remington has made to their plant to produce the Marlin line. It appears that Remington May have turned things around. My guess is that this is a transitional rifle as it has the micro-grove rifling. No two ways about it, this one was a gamble. My dealer offered to make me a deal on it and after a bit of haggling we agreed on a price of $400 out the door.

Took it out to the range Saturday with three different loads consisting of 150 grain Winchester, 170 grain Speer and 125 grain Sierra hollow points all loaded to respectable, upper end velocity, levels. I must say I was favorably impressed. It shot like a vintage Marlin 336 with groups running around 1&1/2” to 2” at 100 yards. The rifle ran very smoothly feeding and ejecting rounds with little to no effort. Probably could have shot better groups except for the 100 lb trigger pull that was set at the factory. All-in-all I’d say I got a good one; and one that merits a $115.00 after market trigger. I’m sure the new trigger will help the groups shrink. More to follow...

Looks very nice. I've been looking for one myself. Either the price was way to high for a JM Marlin. Or a transitional Remlin thats questionable.. I'd prefer a blued model instead of the dull finish. I don't need it but would like one if the right one come along. I'd have grabbed that one for 400 myself. Enjoy it.

Those Y models are the go to guns for 445 Super Mag conversions. I’m looking around for one presently to do just such a conversion.

Marlin still uses MicroGroove in new .30/30’s.
No need to spend $$$ For trigger. I “fix” my Marlin triggers in 20min for “0.00”.
Simply some judicious stoning of the sears.

Yes, it’s a Remlin! So what! Most accurate Marlin I own is a 2016 M1895 in .45/70. I’ve shot several .50” 1-hole groups 3-shot at 50yds with a 405gr Lee over 20.0gr of #2400 for around 1,600fps.
Got it on clearance at Walmart for $290 out the door. (Bought 2!) Sold one, so got it for FREE!

Picked up and tried one of those yesterday at Larry's Madison (AL). Very handy and light rifle! I loved the size and heft of it. I imagine the recoil is pretty stout with the 30-30.

Two things I didn't like: The curved lever and the fact that Remlin apparently sent the lever to the same Japanese razor blade factory that Nissan uses before installing it in the rifle. At a bare minimum, the lever would have to be replaced (Ranger Point Precision) and a new rear peep sight added (Skinner).

Good to know. Haven't spoken with anyone that has actually re-worked a Marlin trigger. Other than polishing the engagement services, did you alter either the angle of the sear or engagement surface on the hammer? If so can you provide me with the new angle change?

The rifle is fairly heavy. Recoil is still pretty moderate. Haven't had any sharp edges to deal with on the lever.

I've got one and I love it. No issues with fit and finish and accuracy is great. I don't mind the shorter stock because I have it set up with a forward mounted scope. It's a handy little package. SAM_6239-01.jpeg

It's the Weaver 48562 scout mount. It required some cutting and filing to get the scope that low.

My brother picked one of these up a few years ago. Aside from the crooked barrel it's a handy rifle. I was going to get one for hunting but shooting his it's one of the loudest rifles I've ever shot. I don't brush hunt with eat pro on, so it was a no go for me. Glad I held out since the new 1894 357 rifles came out and I grabbed a stainless with a 16" barrel. 357 is much quieter from a 16" barrel.

Otherwise, a very handy rifle.

If you think a 16” .30-30 is loud try a 16” or shorter .308 like a SA M1A SOCOM... those things are so brutal they will uncoil your DNA :what:.

Your .357 mag caliber rifle is much more bearable... but they’re still pretty loud on an unprotected ear. To save your hearing have you tried electronic muffs that amplify ambient sound but cut out the rifle blast? Just a thought...

Stay safe.

Nice score!! I purchased a new model 1894 a few months back and couldn't be happier.

Because of poor reviews I did some hand wringing before going forward with my new "Remlin" purchase too.

I love mine. Favors 150gr.

Mine does have sharp corners, but a pair of mechanix gloves solves that if I go through more than a box of ammo at the range.

My matte bluing is pretty crappy too, needs to be oiled or I'll get the orange dusting.

But I got mine on sale with a mail-in-rebate. So I can look past all that for a tiny 30-30

I know the feeling well. Mine looked just fine and was like new but all the bad press made me skeptical. I wish they would bring the model 39A and 39M back. I had a nice 39M in a take-down case that I traded away years ago. I could kick myself every time I think about letting that one go. I hope Remington carries the Marlin name forward. Marlin is an icon I would hate to see vanish.

Oh its there. Just not the same price. Start saving or buy a used one.

Yeah, I use electronic muffs every time I shoot. I have tried them hunting and it's not worth it. Hunting is very important to me and the 357 rifle causes much less hearing damage than a high power rifle. A tiny bit of hearing loss is well worth the hunt to me.
