I am thinking on getting a Marlin 1895 Cowboy with a 26" octagon barrel. Does anybody have one of these? Are they a good rifle. The only caliber it is available in is 45/70 but that dont hurt my feelings any because I love that caliber. I plan to get into reloading in a month or so and I am also wondering if this gun will handle loads that will get me out to 200 yards or so....just in case...Any info on the gun or reloading its cartridges will be appreciated, Thanks in advance!!

They are a perfectly fine substitute for a Winchester...all kidding aside, they are great guns. Better get soon as Marlin is getting ready to shut down the original plant and there most likely will be a run on Marlin originals.

I had one in 44Mag and still hate that I ever sold it. Been trying to buy it back for months now! :banghead:
It shot great and felt great. Go for it, you wont be disappointed!

My dad has a Marlin 30-30 and not only is it accurate its tough as nails!! He has killed ALL of his whitetail deer with it ever since he has been old enough to shoot....so that said, I kinda figured the Marlin would have a good review...lol

I have the 1895 in a 22" barrel, not the cowboy.

They are excellent rifles.

You can easily get out to 200 yards, it just depends on how much work you want to do to get there. The 300 to 350 grain bullets can be made to get to 200 yards without much drop. The 405 grain bullets will force you to get familiar with the arc of the round.

The 45/70 is a very versatile round to reload and shooting it from a classic like the cowboy is just plain fun.

I've got a .45-70, .44 Mag, and .357 Mag under the Marlin line. My .30-30 is a Winchester.
You will not, in the least bit, ever regret the purchase of the 1895 .45-70 Marlin. Ever. It's my favorite rifle. Get you some Lee dies to start out, (Hornady later) and run with it!

I love mine. I haven't shot more than 100 rounds through it yet, but it has functioned fine thus far. Shoots accurately to 100 yards with the buckhorn sights and I plan on using it for deer hunting occassionally. I think you'd want a different sight setup for long range, but historically the 45-70 is a fine long range cartridge.

I like the way it looks and handles with the 26" barrel, and for some odd reason the idea of having 9 rounds of 45-70 in the tube appeals to me.

I own 7 Marlins, an early 39A, three 336s, two 30-30's and a 35 Remington, an 1894 in 41 Magnum and an 1895SS in 45/70. My "normal" hunting rifle is my 1895. It shoots close to MOA with my hand loads. The seventh Marlin is a Model 37 pump 22 from the early part of the last century. You can't go wrong with an 1895.
