I am almost ready to order a Marlin 336c. The only ones I could find in driving distance ranged from $399 to almost $600 bucks. I asked why the price range and was told that the owner prices these depending on fit and finish:cuss: :cuss:

Anyway - I can get a dealer near me to order one for the going $399 price but now I question the differences. In my mind, I could very well get what the previous gunshop owner consitered a $500 doller version and simply pay the nice guy the standard price.
Any thoughts on if there are truly any differences besides astetics from one 336c to another?

pay the local guy the $399 and be happy....

consider this....

your buying a rifle to shoot and not a museum piece.

the 336C is the "premium" grade, so it will be a nice looking rifle (I think mines beautiful and I bought it off a second hand rack).

I wouldn't appreciate being gouged by a dealer who buys a rifle for $399 and then sells it for $600 when it has exceptional wood grain/figure.

you want to develope a friendly working relationship with a local dealer, so you can get advice, service, FFL transfers, etc...

speaking as one who over-analyses everything....get the rifle and have some fun.

Since NC has a little humidity now and again, I'd suggest you look at the Stainless version, if you have to pay that much.

It's available here for under $500, and CA has some of the highest prices.

Most of my hardware is blue, but the stainless stuff is just more fun to use in the field because I don't worry about it as much.

(I know some people have aesthetic issues with stainless, but for a gun that will get used in the field, a clean stainless gun looks a lot nicer than a scratched-up, rusty blue one.)
