Can someone enlighten me on a neat little rifle available at my local GS. I have sort of been looking for a Marlin 39 just because I have always wanted one. The one in question is a "carbine", it has a shorter barrel, 16" I think and slim, a half or threequarter magazine, and a straight rear stock and lever. The rear sight on the barrel has been replaced with a nice little receiver sight. It is tight and in very good condition. The asking price is under $500 which seems to be in line with most of the used M-39s I see for sale. Any information will be appreciated, along with opinions on desirability etc. Thanks. Keep shootin'

Sounds like a 39A Mountie, but don't remember the magazine tube being much shorter than the barrel. I had one and it was a fine rifle.

The 16" gun is known as the 39 TDS, for take down special. They came with a little case for packing the rifle when taken down into the two halves. $500 is a terrific bargain for one of those in good condition, as they are very rare and much sought after. $700-900 is more in line with what I've seen them go for.

Edit: Just checked Gunbroker, and there is one for sale that has 6 bids and is at $702 now, with 22 hours to go. I'd say run, do not walk, back to that store.

Edit again: The TDS has a full magazine. Hmm. May be something else.

Not sure what model, but I love the 39's. They are great rifles and shoot like a dream. I added Skinner Sights to mine and it is a great little rabbit and plinking rifle. Five hundred is a good deal around here too. If you like it, I would pick it up.

If the gun is in good condition and has a barrel less than 20".....it's likely a good deal at under $500. As said....I would be making tracks for the gunshop. I think the TDS models are marked as such....no?

It's not a Mountie and it's not a TDS, it's a Carbine. The 3/4 mag tube is the giveaway.

Buy it.

I've had a Mountie since '63. Good guns. The Mountie has a 20" barrel and a full magazine. The TDS has a 16.5" barrel and a full length mag.

Here's a post I googled up from 2007:

"Blue Book shows the Model 39 Carbine, "similar to 39M, with light barrel, 3/4 mag tube", manufactured from 1963-1967. In 100% condition, it is valued at $500, in 95% at $400."

Thanks for the input guys. JohnBT is right. I knew it wasn't a Mountie because I had identified that as one I wanted. The gun shop owner was there today and ID'd it as a Carbine Model. Apparently they were only made for a few years and less than 10K were made. Anyhow, it is on layaway. I didn't have enough cash on me to pick it up today put will pick it up in a couple of days. Sweet little rifle. Again, thanks for the help. Keep shootin'

Good call, galena

My brother's got a 39M. (Mountie) What a nice-handling gun it is! I think he paid about $400 8 years ago.

I'm not sure how old his is, but I am sure that it is a good shooter and that the fit & finish puts today's rifles from Marlin to shame. You did well. The peep sight is icing on the cake.

Here's my brothers': (didn't have the key for the lock, sorry for that)

Marlin 39 Carbine

Well, I picked it up yesterday. To say I am pleased would be an understatement. It is in very good to excellent overall condition. The blue is thinning overall and there are several rust spots around the muzzle, both sides, top and bottom, and on the mag tube. It looks like it could have been blood spatter that was never wiped off. They cleaned up a bit but there is some minor pitting. I bought it as a shooter and shoot it does. Keep shootin'

I bought my 39 carbine at an estate sale a few years ago for $275.oo and have been using it for a skunk gun. I could not find any information on it and the serial number was no help on the marlin serial number search page. Four digit numbers show it was made in the late 1800s I wish. This gun is in pristine condition and is as accurate as others I use for play. Thanks guys and gals for the information.
