I've been looking for a hunting rifle and possible WTSHTF rifle. I've shot a couple rifles before...22 lr and M16 (USCG LE training every 6 months). I have found a 44 mag lever action in the paper for 350.00 with scope. What do ya'll think? My budget is less than 500. Or, should I buy 2 different guns, like a Stevens 200 in 30.06 and SKS?

$350 is a good price for a Marlin 1894 in 44 mag in decent shape. If there was one locally for 300-350 in good condition I would own it and I already have one. Careful they are very addicting to shoot...

Lever guns are FUN!, in addition to being very practical for several things...

General plinking, hunting up to deer-size game, zombie repelleant ( insert large grin here ) and learning the "Art of The Rifle".

One caveat (ok, 2 caveats)...

They are addicting.

Don't try the "Spin-Cock" move, ala 1960's "The Rifleman" tv show...if it is the full-size rifle, you WILL smack yourself in the face with it..
Never mind HOW I know, I just know

Had a friend with a 44 lever action (think it was a Ruger) and a Ruger 44 revolver. Both were amazing to shoot and the ability to use the one round in both guns was pretty nice too. The noise will usually turn heads at the range.

I've always loved lever action rifles and if you don't have one, the 44 would make a nice addition to your collection. You should also pick up a 30-30 at some point if you don't have one yet.
