Marlin 444 hard loading

Hello. I have a Marlin Mod. 444ss. When I load a round it only goes in 1/2 way then I have to force the cartridge in and it scratches and shaves brass from the shell. Can I open this port up a bit or take some off the gate? Has anyone else experienced this problem or know of a fix? Thanks.
P. S. The OAL is right on spec.
