Marlin 60 FTF?

Got a used marlin 60 today for $50 The gun is about 94%.

And yes I cleaned it. Last night when I got it home. AND today after the FTE

New problem, I got the FTE fixed now it won't fire. Everything is back together and it wont shoot.

I've got a model 60 that I've had since I was 12ish. I don't ever remember the thing doing that, but when I went out to shoot it for the first time in about 10 years last week it was doing the same thing. I was using federal HP from Walmart (the 550 for $9.89).

Took it apart and cleaned it up. Barring cleaning might try different ammo. I do have a box of standard velocity CCI that I haven't opened yet, maybe I'll break that open and find out while I'm at it.

Would hate to think that my trusty model 60 doesn't like certain new ammos.

EDIT: I haven't shot it yet since cleaning. Won't get out till tomorrow or Saturday.

clean it, 22's, especially cheap guns shooting cheap ammo, foul quickly, the gun and ammo are fine, just needs to be wiped out with some oil. Had the same prob with my first 60, after about 300 rounds it wouldn't eject, my dad then showed me how to clean a gun.

Pretty funny to give that advice to a "sniper4life"....

Went and found a couple boxes of different stuff. Everything from remington, federal and cci. The only thing that shoots reliable is CCI high velocity. Id really like to be able to shoot everything else though

high velocity slams the bolt harder, pushes it through grit which can stop the rifle from ejecting less powerful rounds.

The only thing that shoots reliable is CCI high velocity.

There is your answer imo. Clean it. The high velocity probably throws a little more force on the bolt so it ejects and feeds properly through all the gummed up crap while the standard velocity and cheaper ammo doesn't.

You said you just got it so here is a link for disassebly for you:

Comes right apart in about 5 major assemblies that can be cleaned fairly easily without taking them completely apart.

When I cleaned mine the feed assembly was black and gummed up...but after cleaning I found out it was chrome

If high velocity cycles and standard doesn't, If it's clean then just oil the hell out of it, then again maybe the recoil spring is too tough for standard velocity ammo.

Well that doesn't sound good for my rifle having the same problem. I'll make sure to get out tomorrow and find out.

Besides cleaning I almost want to say springs, but cleaning is just about where my expertise ends so don't listen to me after that :)

Check the extractors, there is one on each side of the bolt, sometimes they will get the tips broke off, also check the chamber for a burr where the firing pin hits, this can be ironed out real easy with a tool from Brownells.

It's possible it's one of the very picky ones about ammo. The two my kids have both prefer Federal Lightning or Classic ammo, accuracy and reliability with everything else is not as good.

They ARE picky about ammo--Mine is too, but not as bad as you describe. I get an occasional FTE with standard velocity, but never with MiniMags.

I had one of those. Half the time it wouldn't eject properly no matter what type ammo I used or how well it was cleaned. Sold it within a couple weeks.

the trigger gaurd screw

i have that problem if i tighten the trigger gaurd screw to much. back it off a hair and try dry fireing it. that is about the only problem i've ever had with it.

make sure outside of bolt assy,. is very clean and smooth.l also make sure inside of receiver is the same. also smooth up and polish the return spring rod, and clean the return spring. then , take some dental picks and make sure the groove parts in iside on the chamber face, where the extracor clips fit into, are nice and clean. lastly check the extracor clips iwth some bifocals or mag glass, to make sure the edges are clean and sharp and not bent or jagged, etc.

Had a friend give me a 1975 era model 60 a decade back.. had a broken shell lifter housing. Replaced that from Brownells but neglected to realize that there is a "new" style that requires a new exjector spring.

What i fond was that at some point someone had done a lot of dry firing and prying out of shells with a steel object. Had a burr on the entrance to teh chamber and there was a burr on one of the extractor cutouts in the barrel that would not allow the bolt to go fully into battery. Also a lot of lead build-up in the top of the receiver against the barrel as well as in the extractor slots... which added to the problem.

I ended up replacing both extractor claws, cleaning up the chamber entrance and other burrs as well as putting the correct spring in and it'll run with decent ammo... not quite 100% (less with federal) but good enough for the GF's son to learn to shoot with.

Umm...does the extractor not pull the shell out completely and it just gets fed back into the throat? Or is it being pulled out but not ejected out of the action? If it's not ejecting you need to just bend the ejector spring outwards (direction where shells are ejected) a bit with a pair of pliers. It's a small piece of wire that juts out when you pull the bolt all the way back. This is a common problem and it happens on mine too. I guess all marlin 60s need to have this wire bent out every once in a while.

my 6o did the same thing. noticed if I shot stingers or other HOT bullets it cycled flawlessly. checked my 10/22 (which NEVER did that) and noticed the recoil spring was not as strong. so I clipped a little off the marlin's recoil spring and now it shoots cheaper bullets perfectly. I wonder if stingers will cause any harm now by throwing the bolt back harder:confused:

Ok guys i clipped the recoil spring a little and it worked. I fired it by using my finger to pus the sear out of the way, the trigger isnt releasing the sear. Suggestions?

Thanks for all the help......... really appreciate it. This is my first semi-auto that I have owned. Just bolts, pumps, and lever guns before this.

The nearest gunsmith is about an hour and a half away. So I'd appreciate all the help you could give me.

When I pull the trigger nothing happens, it will creep back but then it will stop and wont go further back. But I can fire it by releasing the sear with a screwdriver. How do I fix

I have a Model 60 with the same FTE problem. The gun is about 10 years oild and has had more rounds though it than i can begin to count. High velocity ammo seems to do a bit better, but i still get jams; just old age i suppose

oh wait, we are all wrong here. if you take the action out and flip it over, you will see acoiled spring on the top side, that comes out to a straight point , right in to the feed channel fo the action, make sure the end tip of that very tough , straight spring, is pointing a little bit higher, and a little more in towards the center of that feed channel. when the shell is being pulled back, it hits the end of that spring, like a joust being pushed into a riders' chest, and kicks it out.
