Got a new 925 for Christmas and want to mount a scope on it. I haven't looked too hard but so far have not found ring bases specifically for this model at Midway or Brownells.

Question #1 - Do I have to buy them from Marlin?

I also looked briefly at Walmart but they were pretty picked over and only had one set of bases with some Marlin models listed, but the 925 was not one of them.

Question #2 - Suggestions on a not-too-pricey but decent 4x scope?

Thanks.

I am 99% sure that it has a grooved receiver like my Marlin 25MN. You can just buy a set of quality .22 dovetail rings and mount them directly to the action, no bases. I have a suggestion, before you buy some high dollar rings, do yourself a favor and get a set of the $5 Bushnell Vertical split rings. They are the best kept secret in the industry and should cost about four times thier price. I have them, they clamp like a vise, are durable and have not lost zero after 2 years and about 500 rounds of .22 mag.

Receiver is drilled and tapped, not grooved. It needs bases. I was just lurking on rimfirecentral.com and saw a post where someone with a 925 bought their bases directly from Marlin. I want an additional clip so that may be the best bet. thanks.

uh, slight correction...

Jackal - sorry. You are right. I just looked at the gun and actually read part of the owner's manual. The receiver is grooved AND has 2 screws forward and aft of the bolt, o the receiver. So I will look into the split rings that you recommend. Owner's manual suggested tip off type rings with this receiver. Any thoughts on those?

signing off for the night...

I highly recommend the Nikon 4x32 ProStaff rimfire scope. They are head and shoulders above the run of the mill .22 scopes, with much better optics. Retail is about $110, but Natchez Shooters Supply has some factory refurbished units for $89.95. See:

I have just such a refurb on one of my rifles and it's great.

bkl and kwiksite and weaver make bases for the drill and tap. I like kwiksites. also for a scope, all of the big box stores, should have a 4x airrifle rated scope, or 3.9. tasco makes a 3.9 with muffs, and glasses that comes in the hard pack, Academy sells it for 30. , and the glass is very clear. also Daisy sells a airrifle rated 4x , that is quite good as well.
