Welp I am one of those guys that always said....they never bust.....but over this weekend I noticed mine was just that.....cracked.

After ringing some steel in an uneventful 4-5 mags I take the thing in to clean it.

Now I never really "cleaned" it....taking the "lower" trigger group apart and getting all the gook out of there...but figured....you know I bet this has never been done....looks a little nasty in there, I know it is a real b!tch to put it back together....but hay I put together model 8's I can deal with this right?!?!?

So taking it all apart, I notice the place where the front most pin goes through the "trigger group" the plastic there does not look quite correct....there is a little bump there. Take off the specs and sure enough there it is....a crack. WELL *&^#. I am thinking so a little super glue....epoxy...just how do you fix this. Well lets look online see if numrich or whatever they are called now has one and what it goes for....I bet it is buckets of money.

So I get online and start looking....humm I did not know there are two versions of this thing....ok...I got the "new" version....now lets see just how much I am going to be out....$100....$200....I am sure this is insane.

Nope $17.75....oh the horror....If I want a "real" used marlin one get ready to shell out the big bucks $19.75. Man oh man this is just insane.....they want an entire $20 bill....where do they get off..

Boy oh boy those guys that say these plastic things bust all the time....mine only lasted the better part of 40 years....cheap pile of junk....and now to fix it they want a jefferson....well I tell you those guys that bad mouth this plastic thing while making love to their glocks they really have showed me the truth.

Now to be real for a half minute......

Yea it did crack, and yea I am sure I could have put it back into service, but after seeing just how cheap the replacement parts are I just ordered the part.....this was yesterday.

Now I usually don't like leaving a gun apart for several days...I am old and will likely forget how to put it back together....and I don't have a book for this thing...so I guess I would need to find or order a book if I forget....but this time....wow.

I have never been as close to tossing things across the room as I have been with this thing....now off the top of my head.

There are like 6 welded pins on half of the "trigger group".....it looks a little like an over grown model 60....two metal plates with all the gutz inside. One E clip holds everything together.

Keeping everything lined up while you push these 6 pins through....well hell....I think I will make some pins to hold everything in place and let the "real" pins push the temp ones through. I don't usually leave parts out but thoughts of leaving the mag disconnect out really crossed my mind.

Now I know what all those little puzzles we had as kids are for...so you can turn this that way, tilt it this way, and gently tap so this thingy falls into place.

I really don't want to take it apart again....and I did not have it all the way down....still left the button in......

You gripe about an Auto 5....you think a Model 8/81 is hard to put together.....try one of these things......and I came this close to getting a 45 version this past weekend.

It is a sickness I tell you...A sickness.

  1. Gee I didn't know they break Mine is either the first or second year they were made. Probably has less that 1K rounds through it. But plastic does dry out. Can you post a link or send me a PM where you got it? For that price I'll get a spare while they are available. Thanks

I have one of the new models and didn't know you could buy the lower mag well part. I had read they were no more. I may order a spare myself. I really like this little gun. I bought mine used and it had never been cleaned but had been shot a lot. I had no problem getting it apart and did find the original buffer was disintegrated. I ordered a new rubber buffer from Black Jack buffers. I also ordered a 17lb and 21lb recoil spring from Wolfe Springs. I have the 17lb spring installed.

I have read that the problem with the plastic mag well was that cleaning solvents would wreck the plastic. So I always take mine apart and clean the metal with gun cleaner but just use a damp rag on the plastic parts.

This is my second one of these to own. I stupidly sold the first one. My buds son used the first gun to kill his first first deer. The bullet made a through and through wound and the deer ran about 45 yards and died. It never made it out of sight. I would like one of the new Ruger PCC Carbines but right now money is a little tight.:(

Here is a link to the Blackjack buffers. When these guns first came out there was at least one article about loading extra hot rounds for them using Blue Dot powder. It was found the extra hot loads with the 11lb factory spring would damage the hammer strut and a couple other parts. Its best accept thes guns for what they are. If you need more power buy a different rifle. Any lever action 357 will leave the 9mm carbines in the dust power wise.
