I've been wanting to buy a 30/30 lever action for some time now. There is a Marlin lever action at Dick's Sporting Goods for $299 and on sale for $279. It comes with a scope, which I'm not sure I want on there. Should I get it or look for one with more fancy wood or what. I really don't know model differences.

The marlin at dicks is a decent price, but the scope it comes with is total junk. The rings are too low on that combo also, so you normaly have to take off the iron sights to get the scope to fit into the right eye releif. Marlin does make a good (if ugly) lever action. Their action is much stronger than a winchester 94.

Depends. I got a Marlin 336 last year strictly for deer hunting, I reload so I can shoot it a lot. It has a decent Simmons 4x9 scope, I paid about $300 for it. It was used but in excellent shape. Regarding the fancy wood, I tend to go for basic name brand guns that shoot well. I also hunt with them so the aesthetics to me anyway aren't releveant. The price is good but not a steal. I'd offer $250 cash on the counter out the door or the asking price with a couple of boxes of shells, sling, and soft case. Best time to get a deer rifle is about March. Lots available then.

Sounds like a pretty good deal. You can probably do a little better on a used one at a local gun show. I have had great luck on levers that way

Thanks! I'm in no rush. Just wating for the right deal to fall into my hands.

Buy the Marlin 336. Get rid of a scope if it has it. Add a Lyman aperature rear, or a XSS Ghost Ring. You will thank me. :) Faster, just as accurate, and unless you've got bad eyes, more than enough for the effective range of the rifle. It also keeps the balance right for carrying it.

At that price, is this the economy version, or the true M336 with walnut stock and better finish?

I've seen the combos around here at Dicks, Dunhams etc... Typically in the $279 range and I believe they are the 336A model with the hardwood stock. Definetly not the 336C, but still not a bad rifle.
