marlin mod 60 glenfield?????

so ive inherited a marlin glenfield mod 60 .22, from what ive seen on gunbroker they dont go for much so im wondering if they shoot good or if they're junk.

it has a micro groove rifled barrel, whats that mean?

the buffer was shot so i ordered a new one.

any help??
 
They were many a boy's first gun. Great shooters just kinda outdated I guess. At one time they held the niche that 10/22s do now. I still have mine and don't have any plans on selling it, especially since they sell for about $50 at the pawn shop.
 
I've had one for many years. Accuracy is very good. Trigger is good, but new ones are not so good.

Micro groove is marketing-speak. More shallower grooves in the bore.

Try it out. I'll bet you find its a very accurate rifle. Mine requires cleaning every 100 rounds or so to feed reliably, but several people have told me that putting in a new set of springs will fix that. Its a sign of age.
 
Count me as one of the boys who got a model 60 as his first gun. Santa brought that rifle and a scope when I was 8 and I put thousands of rounds through it. As life progressed, it ended up sitting unused for a while and I just recently pulled it out again. Took it apart, cleaned it, lubed it, removed a couple of rusty spots on the outside of the barrel and headed out to the range. Shot just as good as when I first got it. The accuracy wasn't all that great, which I'll claim full responsibility for, but in my opinion, it's the fun that the model 60 delivers that makes it great. I'm sure it will provide you with years upon years of great plinking. Have fun!
 
57 year old "Boy" here

I picked up a Glenfield Model 60 two years ago and love it.

I wanted a cheap, easy to use semi-auto for plinking and found one with the original box and paperwork from 1968 at a local shop.

The Glenfield was the less expensive version of the Model 60 with the same receiver and workings but a less expensive (not walnut) stock. The older ones hold 17 or 18 rounds in the tube, can't remember for sure which it is. (Does that make it an "assault" plinker?)

Mine shoots fine with the iron sights but the little feller was just begging for a little scope and turned out to be a real tackdriver with even a cheapie scope I picked up on clearance somewhere.

You got yourself a nice little rifle there. It is a great rifle to start with for a beginner or first time shooter and one you can have cheap and easy fun with till you hand it off to your kids or grandkids.

Now go buy a couple of bricks and have some fun.
 
Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. To a 12 yo on Christmas it looked better than any of the pilferred Playboys I had under my mattress
 
I've had literally dozens of these things. I got into the habit of buying them at pawn shops, usually for less than 50 bucks, taking them home, cleaning them up and giving them away. They are a little cranky when dirty, but most I've had are more accurate than 10-22's out of the box.
 
Why don't more people here post about the box magazine version of the Model 60?

It's been made in several versions. I think the current one is Model 795 in blue and M995 in stainless.

I briefly had a M795 and liked it, for what it was. It sure wasn't a Kimber Super America Grade, but that isn't its niche. I had to sell it to help pay a tax bill, but am in the market for another. Can't easily find one, though, especially in stainless.

I think these make great little survival/utility .22's.

Years ago I pulled a deal and came up with some extra $ and bought a high dollar HK .22 and 3x9 scope. Real nice. Buddy asked me if I'd take a look at his Glenfield Mod 60. Wasn't shooting right, jamming. Found out he'd had it for nearly thirty years and had never cleaned it. It also had a dime sized Japanese 4x scope on it. I disassembled. cleaned, dolled up the Glenfield, then took it and my HK out to target shoot. The damn Glenfield outshot the Heckler & Koch every time. At 75 yds I was putting ten rounds of Remington yellowjackets in a 1" hole with the Mod. 60. Couldn't come close to it with the other. I sent the HK on down the line, have a clip fed bolt action Glenfield in the house I shoot squirrels with that my ugly dog trees. They are very accurate guns.

The scope is labeled as a 'Glenfield' scope made in Japan, and 'Dime-sized' fits it perfectly!!
 
I have a Model 70 (the clip fed one) that I've had for 20 years or so and it's shoots better then I can. Was at a friends house and there was a M60 sitting by the back door, he said it hadn't worked in years and if I wanted to mess with it I could have it. Took it apart, cleaned out years of neglect and crud and now have 2 nice Marlins for plinking.

We have three at my house, of one vintage or another. Reliable, accurate and a heck of a lot of fun.

Daughter can shoot quarter sized groups at 50-yards with the newer, stainless model 60.

The fun factor alone exceeds the price tag ....

a great value!

Great little guns! Way more accurate than they have a right to be. I got mine 16 years ago. I shot gazillions of rounds through that thing and only cleaned it 2 or 3 times. I finally wore it enough to need a little TLC. After a little tweaking it`s back to it`s old self and it`s as good as ever. I had a brief fling with a dot sighted stainless 10-22 but it`s wierd controls,lack of bolt hold open,lousy trigger,spotty reliability and so so accuracy sent me running back to my old Marlin.
