Would anybody here have any information about Marlin serial numbers? I have a Marlin 336 which has a 70 series SN and the SN itself is in the low 8xxxx. What year was it made? My guess is about 1970-75 but it could be 30 years older or 5 years younger. Surely someone has a table posted somewhere?

Hi there! I sent a short note with my serial number to Marlin and they sent back a sheet with the years and S/N for my rifle. Mine is a .30-.30. made in 1982. didn't know it till I asked. Hope this helps.

...or here.

Marlin year of manufacture may be determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number:

-C
-D
-E
-F
-G
-H
-J
-K
-L
-M
-N
-P
-R
-S
-T
-U
-V
-W
-Y,-Z
-AA
-BB
-AC
-AD, -68
-69
-70
-71
-72

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].
