Ok a friend of mine bought his 2 boys a couple of Marlin XL7 rifles with camo print pattern in 30-06. We went and shot them yesterday and I have to say I'm impressed. One rifle shot better than the other but both were respectable. The better shooting rifle actually shot 2 groups sub-moa with Remington 165gr. corelok ammo. He bought both these rifles for $279 bucks each which for that kind of accuracy cannot be beat. For a kids first rifle on a budget thats awesome.

Marlin XL7 vs Savage Edge

I am trying to decide the Marlin XL7 and the Savage Edge in .270 caliber. I am new to shooting and not in the market for anything more expensive. Does anyone have suggestions between the two? Thank you in advance.

Obviously I can give the Marlin a very high recommendation. A rifle out of the box that shoots sub-moa can't be beat. However I bought a former girlfriend a ladys and youth model Savage in .243 and it was a great shooter too but not as good as the Marlins I just shot. Either way you'll be in good shape.

I went with the XS7Y in 7mm-08. It felt better to me than the Savage, your mileage will, obviously, vary.

The thing is that all of the main players at this price point make good rifles. It's more important to find which one fits you and pleases your eye the most. I personally like the Marlin stock. It does have a blind magazine though it's probably more of a plus than anything from it keeping the synthetic stock stiffer.

The biggest failing for all of them is the lack of iron sights but I'll take it down to my local gunsmith when he gets back to town on the 1st of July and a few dollars worth of work by him will fix that problem.

That detachable mag wouldn't mean much to me considering that its a bolt action rifle. If you buy a Marlin and you can't get it done (killing a deer ect.) in 5 shots then you should probably quit shooting.

I don't think anyone is considering a 'tactical', load the second magazine and reengage the target, setting concerning the detachable magazine on the bolt action rifles.

The detachable magazine allows for easier and safer loading and unloading of the rifle, and the convenience of topping off a round or two that you spent on a animal.lol

The Stevens 200 and Marlin are comparable pricewise. I think the Marlin has better features for the same price. Comparing the Marlin to the Savage Edge, I would suggest the Marlin by a wide margin.

I held both this morning while in a local gun shop. He got about 6 of each in. All had camo stocks. Was not a fan of the stock on either one. But liked the Marlin better than the Edge. If I had to pick one, it would be the Marlin. The only thing I saw about the Marlin that I did not like was the limited caliber choices so far.

Marlin needs to add:

223
22-250
338 Federal
35 Whelen

I would buy one in a 223 AND a 338 federal

I already have a 7mm-08
