Ok DorGunR I'm gonna bite, Where's Scott's at in Glen Burnie? I thought I had tracked pretty much every gun store/range down in the general 20 mile radius from my house. So any help would be nice (especially if they have good service and good prices).

Scott's is on Thelma Rd (Ave?) just off of Crain Highway....VERY close to Quarterfield Rd.

They're in a real small little strip of other businesses; not really a retail shopping strip, but more of a service business location.

Nice guys, small shop. Beautiful dog.

Spot77 is dead on......wish I could add something to his post........hey, maybe I can......the dogs name is Rennie.;)

Re: Marriottsville ops on Sun

Marriottsville has posted that they are open to the public from noon to 4pm on Sundays. Directions and info can be found here . I've only driven by and boy, is it nice. I take it the option for Westminster is Hap Baker's?

My wife reminded me today that we'll be away in New York attending a wedding of a friend. Punch some holes for.

Solomon - If you read the fine print - it's the TRAP range ONLY that's open to the public at Mariotsville on Sundays. It is indeed a nice facility. A member may bring guests, but only two people on the line at a time and one position. They do hold special events sponsored by AGC or one of the clubs.

There are several THR members that belong to one of the AGC clubs, including myself. With enough organization it might be possible to arrange something there. One option would be to line up members and a corresponding number of non-members (or close to it).

Unfortunately I can't make the October shoot. Have fun wherever you-all go!

Ah, my bad. It's been awhile since I perused the sight and I remembered wrong.

Ok, I think people seem ok with Oct 19th, rifle and long range pistol at the Westminister range. The shortest target points are 25yards so if you bring pistols bring those that are appropriate for such ranges (i.e. no snubs unless you are a really good shot). Most of the lanes the longest point is 100 yards but they do have a couple 200 yard lanes as well.

They are on the grounds of the county dump, but they are pretty easy to find. It is pretty deep into the dump but the signs are pretty good. I'll post directions later. Bring your own targets (but not target frames) and ammo as they don't sell any on site. Be prepared so far as bodily functions, all they have available is a port-a-pot, though if that isn't acceptable to you there is a shopping center with a Target and there are fast food restaraunts and gas stations within about a mile from the dump entrance. The cost is $10 for the day or $30 for the season for non-Carroll County residents, and around half that for residents (not being a Carroll County resident I don't know for sure the resident cost but I know it is reduced approx. 50%).

Depending upon where most people are coming from would they want to carpool or caravan there or just meet up at the range?

I'm thinking 3pm would give plenty of daylight for shooting (the range closes 1 hour before daylight) but still leave those who go to church time to go to church in the morning and have family time and lunch with their families. Heck, if you don't mind a late dinner (6 or 7 pm) you'd have time for about 2 hours of shooting and a family dinner too.

If this does in fact work out this will be a very good shooting month. The week before is Mike Irwin's shoot in N. VA. for those who can make it, then there is this shoot, and the next weekend is the southern PA shoot. For those of us in central MD there really is no excuse not to make at least one.

What I'll definately bring:
-The Savage 30-06 with iron sights
-Remington 581 in .22lr with scope (currently my only scoped rifle)
-SKS
-Winchester 94 in 30-30

Maybes:
-Ruger MkII pistol
-6" S&W 586
-Marlin 60
-I may pick up another rifle between now and then which I'd likely bring

If you guys thought I was a bad pistol shot (I am) you haven't seen anything yet. I'm much worse of a rifle shot.:D

Cool....I think I'm in. I'll be bringing my SKS (my one and only rifle) and maybe either the MKII or the SW 2206.

Where's a good place to place to pick up some SKS ammo here in the Balt/DC area?

19th sounds good, might even try to arrange for a babysitter to get the wife out with us too.

Definites from my cache:

M1 Carbine
Winchester 30-06 iron sights
Ruger Super Redhawk .44mag
Springfield 1911

Maybes:

Winchester 1300 Defender 12 gauge ( Do they allow shotguns? couldn't remember seeing anything about it)
S&W 6" 422 .22
Walther P99 .40sw

Do they have sand bags handy there to make rests out of or will we have to bring our own/improvise? Also any unique rules that are specific to that range?

OT: accidentally stumbled on to where Scott's was while heading to a dentist appointment. Stopped in after and looked around and talked a bit. Was tempted to buy a BDM they had after seeing how slim the grip was for a double stack. Images of the wife giving me means look made me leave it there though. and oh yeah...nice dog ;)

I'm not 100% sure. If they do, the shortest target is 25yards so it would almost certainly be slugs only.

Yes they have sandbags.

I can't think of any unique or unusual rules. They call a cease fire about once every half hour so you can change your targets and during cease fire you can't touch your guns (they may require that you keep the action open as well). Guns pointed downrange. Stay behind the firing line unless a cease fire as been called. I really can't think of anything unusual.

I'll try to check for you but being a county owned range my gut tells me that they probably don't allow full-auto. However, I don't remember seeing anything one way or the other in their rules about it (of course I may simply not have noticed).

What are the directions to Westminster range. If I can do it I will be coming from Perry Hall.

Got this info off the state DNR website:

Hap Baker Range
Carroll County Landfill
Route 140
Westminster MD 21157
Contact: JoAnn Hunter
Phone: 410-386-2103
Shooting opportunities for small and large caliber rifle and pistols.
Open to the Public. Daily or season passes are required Days and times vary.

Here is the URL for other range info if you need it sometime:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/wildlife/shootingranges.html

Generally if you are coming from the Baltimore beltway you would take 795 to Route 140. When you see signs for the Landfill pull in (it will be on the right from that direction) and follow the signs to the range.

Specifically, Yahoo Maps can give driving directions to and from pretty much any address. Unfortunately, you need an actual street address, plugging in "Carroll County Landfill" doesn't seem to work. Maybe calling the phone number will get that (I don't have time to try right now, I'll try later). For basic directions from you that at least take you to Rt. 140 plug in Route 140 as the destination and it will work. The only potential problem there is depending upon where you hit Rt. 140 there is a chance you might go the wrong way on 140.

Don't want to put a damper on the Hap Baker get together but this time of the year with hunting season coming up it gets real crowded up there with only ten lanes and two of those are 100 and 200 yards only. They also reserve the right to limit you to two hours. I've gotten there in past years at 9AM and still had to take a number & wait a couple of hours. I've also had to wait this year as well in late August and early September. A number of hunters are zeroing in early. I'm not planning to go back until December.

No full auto and some of the range officers (all great guys) have differences of opinions on what constitutes rapid fire (also a no-no). Also, leave any mag over 20 rounds at home. They used to be allowed but after last year's sniper incidents they prefer that they not be used.

Besides sandbags they also provide spotting scopes on all lanes and have targets for sales if you run out. Out of county yearly fee in $60.

OK guys, do you want to change the location to avoid problems with crowding due to the hunting crowd (and if so where), change to a handgun shoot at an indoor range, or try the current plan anyway but have a handgun or two in the trunk in case we need a quick "plan B"?

The last is my preference. Keep with the current plan, but bring a couple handguns in case we can't get some lanes due to the hunters. Then we have handguns to use and we can just go up to Timonium range for some pistol shooting (I'll have to double check which Sundays are bowling pin shoots- if it is that Sunday it will be a fun activity though there may be a wait there too). If we go with that plan it will be especially important to be there on time at 3PM since it would be a half hour drive to Continental Arms (the Timonium range) and they are only open until 5PM (it might be 6PM) on Sundays. At any rate, I wasn't thinking about hunting season (not being a hunter myself) so the problem with crowding due to hunters getting ready for hunting season will probably be an issue with any range open to the public. However, I've really "psyched" myself up for a rifle shoot so I don't want to give up on that idea if we don't need to. Of course, I am flexible though depending upon what others want.

Norton, you asked about ammo.....well, so happens that there's a show this weekend (Oct. 4&5) at Timonium Fairgrounds. I'll be hitting it on the 5th.

SolomonShort....I'm thinking about heading up there and seeing if I can come away with JUST the ammo:evil:

Just a bump...

Oct 19th, 3PM at the Haps Baker Firearms Facility in Westminister. MD THR rifle and 25yd pistol shoot.

Also, still need your feedback, re. hunters sighting in and last minute pre-hunting season practice. Apparently the range might be too crowded this time of year. Do we want to change the plan (maybe a pistol shoot at Continental Arms in Timonium) or simply have a backup plan (meet at the Westminister range, but have some pistols with us in case there is too long a wait and we can go to Continental Arms)?

Must be nice!

I went to Shooters' Discount today to pick up that Mauser I've been yapping about, or maybe even a SKS since I know he has good prices on them and they were CLOSED!!!

Arg! I think I even knew that they were closed on Tuesdays and I STILL went!

I suppose I'll head back down tomorrow.

Congrats on your new rifle.....

Lemme know if you go to Continental. I'm only 15 minutes away, and also a member. We could call ahead for lanes.

Hooray for New Members!

(You have to say this out loud with a really lame Jamaican accent) :D

Went and picked up a Garand in .308 so I'll need some help to sight it in
Man, I can't say that I'm not a bit jealous. Hopefully, you won't mind letting other people try it out. Congratulations.
