OK, they finally returned my message.
Unfortunately, there are no pavilions available. Not only at Centenial but at all the Howard County parks all the pavillions are reserved for Sun, June 6th. I guess they must have gone to someone who was lucky enough to call at a time when the woman who does the rentals was at her desk (she is rarely there even at the times her voice mail says she will be), unless they called 3-4 months ago (also possible).
This gives us a few options:
1) We can go on that day to Centennial Park anyway and simply hope we can get a picnic table and use picnic blankets. If someone shows up about an hour early it might make it easier to get a table to put the food on and we can simply bring folding chairs and blankets.
2) We can change the day to the first Sunday they have available (whatever it may be). I'm sure July 4th is already taken, but if we can get a pavilion the week before or the week after the 4th we can sort of make it an Independence Day thing which would be fitting. Then, since June 6th is already on all our calendars as a THR thing, maybe it could be the next THR shoot.
3) We can look into doing it at a different park. Maybe one of the Patapsco State Park areas will be available.
4) They did have a large pavilion available at Cedar Lane Park (about another mile or two down Rt 108) on Sat, June 5th. I wouldn't be able to go then, and someone else would have to organize it and reserve the pavilion since that is the sabbath, but if everyone wanted to keep it the same weekend that is an option. I have no idea what it will cost (she didn't include that on the message- she called when I wasn't near my phone).
My preference is the first simply because we already announced it will be on June 6th and it is better not to confuse people. There may be people who haven't posted here that planned to go so we woudn't know to warn them, and they might not check and see the change. If someone gets there early we should be able to find an open picnic table and if we all knew to bring folding chairs we should be reasonably comfortable (especially if someone has a camping screen room or a portable canopy they can bring for people who need to temporarily get out of the sun- even if that isn't allowed there are shady areas and the boat docks have enclosed areas).
My second choice is either choice 2 or 3. Either moving the day or location will confuse some people, we may lose some who planned on going, and some may still end up showing up at Centennial Park on the 6th. However, either idea could give us the pavilion which would give us plenty of room and some more comfort.
The choice I don't like so much, but I put it out there because it is an option, is the last one. I'd like to be there and I can't on any Sat. However, I figured it is an option, and if it is the one that works best for everyone else I don't want to get in the way of it so I presented the option.
Edit:
I just thought of another option. We might lose the park imenities (playgrounds and/or boat rentals, and no lake or river) but...
Does anyone have a large backyard they'd like to "donate" for the picnic?
Again though, that poses the same problems as moving to another park. We would need to be sure everyone knows about the change since June 6th at Centennial has been posted for some time now. This idea (if anyone would like to host it) would be tied with the middle two options as my second choice. It would lose the charm of a park, but add the charm of being more warm and family-like.
