Marylanders, non-shooting get together! Anyone up for a picnic?

OK, I am still waiting for them to get back to me to see for sure how much it will cost me to rent the pavillion. Depending upon the cost I might just eat it (though I'd be happy if others shared the load). If it is more than I'm willing to risk eating (if no one else contributes) I'll post here to see if someone else wants to take the risk of eating it or if we should simply not reserve one and then if there is one available we can have it and if not we can use picnic tables (if they aren't full) or picnic blankets.

Anyway, here is a link to their website with some information about the park as well as giving an idea as to directions (starting with Rt. 29- go to Rt. 29 towards Columbia then when you get to 108 follow their directions) and park layout. To get to Rt. 29 from Baltimore take the Beltway (Rt. 695) to Rt. 70 West, take 70 to Rt. 29 South (it is a left exit). To get to Rt. 29 from DC take the Beltway (Rt. 495) to Rt. 29 North.

I'm willing to kick in $10 for the rental...if a few other people do that, we'll be covered easily.

I saw Cliff at On Target last week and mentioned it to him (BTW, a BG would NEVER want to be on the receiving end of his pistol - he's quite the marksman):D

If someone wants to collect everyone's handles and "real" names and put it together in a list.....I'll take care of the name tags.

OK, they finally returned my message.

Unfortunately, there are no pavilions available. Not only at Centenial but at all the Howard County parks all the pavillions are reserved for Sun, June 6th. I guess they must have gone to someone who was lucky enough to call at a time when the woman who does the rentals was at her desk (she is rarely there even at the times her voice mail says she will be), unless they called 3-4 months ago (also possible).

This gives us a few options:
1) We can go on that day to Centennial Park anyway and simply hope we can get a picnic table and use picnic blankets. If someone shows up about an hour early it might make it easier to get a table to put the food on and we can simply bring folding chairs and blankets.

2) We can change the day to the first Sunday they have available (whatever it may be). I'm sure July 4th is already taken, but if we can get a pavilion the week before or the week after the 4th we can sort of make it an Independence Day thing which would be fitting. Then, since June 6th is already on all our calendars as a THR thing, maybe it could be the next THR shoot.

3) We can look into doing it at a different park. Maybe one of the Patapsco State Park areas will be available.

4) They did have a large pavilion available at Cedar Lane Park (about another mile or two down Rt 108) on Sat, June 5th. I wouldn't be able to go then, and someone else would have to organize it and reserve the pavilion since that is the sabbath, but if everyone wanted to keep it the same weekend that is an option. I have no idea what it will cost (she didn't include that on the message- she called when I wasn't near my phone).

My preference is the first simply because we already announced it will be on June 6th and it is better not to confuse people. There may be people who haven't posted here that planned to go so we woudn't know to warn them, and they might not check and see the change. If someone gets there early we should be able to find an open picnic table and if we all knew to bring folding chairs we should be reasonably comfortable (especially if someone has a camping screen room or a portable canopy they can bring for people who need to temporarily get out of the sun- even if that isn't allowed there are shady areas and the boat docks have enclosed areas).

My second choice is either choice 2 or 3. Either moving the day or location will confuse some people, we may lose some who planned on going, and some may still end up showing up at Centennial Park on the 6th. However, either idea could give us the pavilion which would give us plenty of room and some more comfort.

The choice I don't like so much, but I put it out there because it is an option, is the last one. I'd like to be there and I can't on any Sat. However, I figured it is an option, and if it is the one that works best for everyone else I don't want to get in the way of it so I presented the option.

Edit:

I just thought of another option. We might lose the park imenities (playgrounds and/or boat rentals, and no lake or river) but...

Does anyone have a large backyard they'd like to "donate" for the picnic?

Again though, that poses the same problems as moving to another park. We would need to be sure everyone knows about the change since June 6th at Centennial has been posted for some time now. This idea (if anyone would like to host it) would be tied with the middle two options as my second choice. It would lose the charm of a park, but add the charm of being more warm and family-like.

Hey guys, I've had something unexpected come up (a good thing) and I'm going to be in CA just before the picnic. I've bought my ticket so that I will be taking the red eye back so I can get home for the picnic. However, I may be late so I won't be able to be the one to get there early to be sure we get a table and if we do a pot luck I probably should be doing the main course (hot dogs and burgers) after all. So it would be a good thing if someone would volunter to get there about 30min to 1hr early to be sure we get a table. Thanks.

No problem, I'll be there early.

My kids will be restless anyway, so the sooner I get there, the sonner they can expend their energy......

I think most of the people going know me, so it shouldn't be a problem finding me.

Maybe I'll make a big red banner that says, "Evil Gun Owners First Annual Slaughter Babies at the Park Picnic" or something; that should keep the soccer mom crowd away and you'll certainly be able to find me quickly.

:neener:

Heh, heh....once you start bean the baked beans and hot dogs, they'll al stay away anyhow:neener:

Hey Ric, glad you'll make it. Let Ron and some of the other guys know too just in case they don't see the thread over at ar15.

Yeah it would be great to meet some of the other members here and all that good stuff.

So have we gotten a time and location for this brew-haha yet ? :)

What about a park located closer to Baltimore or BWI maybe?

Either way I'll still try my damndest to make it. It its early in the afternoon I may be a little late. I will be driving down from York PA that Sunday.

June 6th, 1pm (or a bit earlier if you wish; I'll be there between 12:15 and 12:30).

Centenial Park is in Howard County; Chaim posted a link to their website just a few posts back - you can get directions from that. I think we're all gonna' bring our own food I guess - looks like it'll be too hard to coordinate who will bring what. But feel free to bring a favorite dish to share with the group; I'm kinda' hoping Chaim will make some seriously original Kosher food. My wife will probably make some brownies for the group. I'll bring a cooler with ice and some drinks, but if one or two others did the same we could probably have the beverages covered.

I hope to make it though that is the day I see the GF off to Alabama to start her job; I follow this fall. :(

Might be good to meet some friends!

Anyone know if beer is allowed at Centennial Park? I used to play softball there in the mid 1990s and seem to recall its a no-no.

I also recall its pretty big, can anyone with some artistic talent maybe make a sign?

Take care!

Yup, it is still on.

I was unable to get a pavillion so look for us at or near one of the picnic tables. Be sure to bring a folding chair or two if you have them if you don't want to sit on the ground or stand the whole time. It will be at 1pm, but it would be helpful if someone gets there early (Spot77 has already voluntered, but one or two more to keep him company would be nice) to wait for a table to be sure we get one. Also, those who plan to be early may want to consider a simple sign on poster board or something to ID us (I'll reimburse you for the posterboard if you'd like).

Since we didn't get a pavillion it looks like it will be bring your own food. If you'd like to bring something you like to make in volume for everyone, or just enough for you, either is fine. The main thing is for everyone to be there.

Misc. questions:
-Does anyone have a frisbee they could bring? Mine is in pretty bad condition.
-Does anyone have one of those portable horseshoe sets?

Consider bringing alone some picnic type games you may have that you think the group might enjoy. Keep in mind that there will probably be children there in your selections.

I'll be out of town until a couple hours before the picnic so I won't be posting or able to check. You will probably all want to check the weather just before the picnic. If the reports get ugly towards the end of the week, one or two of you may want to think about calling for a rain date. If it rains that day I guess we'll just have to come up with a rain date.

Barring unforseen circumstances the picnic will be in the main area of Centennial Park (use the main entrance off 108, not one of the side entrances) starting at 1pm. Look for a group of people hopefully with a THR and/or TFL sign. If not, Spot77 and his brother Norton are pretty tall, it would be hard to miss them. Also, I'll be wearing my yarmulke as usual, and while there may be other Orthodox Jews there, most likely I'll be the only one in a group of people where I am the only one wearing a yarmulke.

Well I won't be able to make it after all, I have an 11 or 12 flight out so I'm kinda short on time after I wake up. Yeah I wake up late on Sundays :p

Are there grills up there for us to use? If not, I can throw the gas grill in the back of the truck and we can cook on that.....

Looking forward to it.

I'll try to hae a plain white sign on a small pole that simply says, "THR"

BTW, lemme' see if this picture comes through or not. It's a pic of our friend and fellow THR member Cliff being interviewed by the local media back in March at one of the Assault Weapons Ban hearings in Annapolis....
