I need some advice. I'll be buying a Weaver scope, and some of the models are only available in matte. The rifle is a new Winchester M70 Classic LT, which has a gloss finish. Rings aren't a problem - I can get gloss or matte. The question is: does a matte scope look okay on a gloss rifle, or should the scope be gloss?

Why Weaver? I have an old, damaged K-4, and the new Weaver company is offering a trade-in of half the value of the new model's MSRP. Since mine's broken, it sounds like a good deal to me.

If I get a new K-4, I can get gloss. If I want a Grand Slam, though, I'll need to get matte. Almost the whole reason I bought the M70 was for its looks, so I don't want to mess that up. Taste advice, please.

The matte looks out of place on a nice blued rifle. It's easier to get away with a glossy scope on a matte gun. What you could do is get glossy rings and keep a "Scope Coat" on it when not in use so you wouldn't know that it didn't match ;)

Matte vs. gloss? To me, that's a case of six of one, half-dozen of the other. Way back when, matte was not available.

I dunno. For hunting, a matte scope and a parkerized rifle seem more sensible than a highly polished, blued rifle and a glossy scope. Not that my Weatherby doesn't shine! :D

I guess that I care least for the stainless finish on a scope, insofar as my own aesthetic taste...But that's just me.

But I can't see where either matte or gloss would reflect against somebody else's taste...

I'm a matte guy, but I've got a gloss Nikon Monarch sitting on top of a matte Remington 700, just because I got a very good deal on the scope. It certainly is personal preference, but I still think the scope and rifle should be finished the same, if you have a choice. If the rifle is gloss, I'd choose to get a glossy scope. Otherwise, they just look wrong together. In my opinion.

Okay, thanks. I was leaning towards gloss/gloss, but I wondered if I were missing maybe the "most fun you can have standing up" by not mixing matte/gloss.
