Hi guys,
I have a Mauser 243 which had an old Swift on it. When I switched to a Bushnell 3-9 the safety is hitting the rear of the scope. Do I need to relocate the safety? It is already wearing high rings. Do I need extra high?
Change the safety AND the rings. It sounds like you have a wing safety. Find one that uses less arc and trade the high rings for medium or, even better, low rings. If your scope has a large rear bell, trade it for one with a normal sized bell
You have a few options to choose from. You can install a low scope safety in place of the one you have now. You can install a Winchester Model 70 style 3 position swing safety (the most costly option) or replace your trigger assembly with a Bold or a Timney with a thumb safety. Medium height rings,as MistWolf said, are what your Mauser "should" have not the high ones.
I agree with JimmyRay. Having a Mauser 22-250 custom that is single shot (permanent loading ramp), I can leave my action open and just close and go. But, if I were using the magazine, I'd opt for the three position Winchester Model 70 style safety. It's the best solution for a rifle that will likely just gain value as time goes on
Here is a conversion kit from Brownell's,<http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=0/k=mauser+swing+safety+kit/t=P/ksubmit=y/s_o=New+Products+(Descending)/Products/All/search=mauser_swing_safety_kit> also the complete bolt shroud with safety<http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=0/k=mauser+bolt+shroud+with+safety/t=P/ksubmit=y/s_o=New+Products+(Descending)/Products/All/search=mauser_bolt_shroud_with_safety>. This is a do-it-yourself(as long as you have the proper tools and can follow instructions.
I'd have my smith do it, but it could be done in a home shop. There is a bit of grinding and fitting involved. And, most folks want it blued to match the rest of the action which takes a bit of know how (to get the match). It's your call
