Are there any commonlly available M-98 pattern milsurps that come w/ aperture sights as issued? Don't recall seeing any, and my marksmanship w/ the customary open sights is just abysmal. I'd like something that corresponds to my Turk and Yugo the way the No. 4 SMLE corresponds to the previous marks.

Failing that, what's the best/cheapest way to mount a peep-sight on one of the afore-mentioned 98's? As an alternative, can anyone share any experience they may have with the "scouting" of a 98? Is there a good, relatively inexpensive (see the pattern?) scope mount that replaces the rear tangent sight? I'd prefer not to mill or drill-and-tap the gun.

XS Sights makes a ghost ring that requires drilling and tapping. Mojo Sights makes one that replaces the issue backsight. It's a drop in that works well, though not as precise as the XS since it's further forward. I prefer the Mojo for ease of installation. It's accurate enough for field use. Sorry, I'm traveling and don't have the links handy, a google search should point you in the right direction.

The FR8 comes to mind as being issued with an aperture sight.

Frankly, if you are willing to get another rifle, then you might want to consider a non-collectable and go ahead and D&T, alter the bolt, and mount a scope. The M48 or M48A are in that category in my mind, as is any VZ 24 "beater" available for less than $75. Don't go scoping a nice 1909 Argentine or even a WWII K98.

just my $.02....

Thanks for the info, guys. More is welcome.

FR8, hmmmm.... Well, I shoulda mentioned up front that I wanted something I could shoot relatively accurately, in 8x57. Ammo's sooooo cheap right now. Have to ponder this.

A 1903A3 is a Mauser 98 so close the US had to pay royalties for it and it has a great aperture back sight AND shoots good ole 30-06 of which there are lots of surplus available.

I just got one myself and they are fantastic shooters!

The Mojos are great. I just put one on the Yugo 48 I'm using as a truck gun. I like it so much I'm getting a couple more for two of my other Mausers. If you have a C&R they're (relatively) cheap at Brownells. Otherwise I know Mojo posts specials over at Parallax once in a while.
