planning on picking up a Mauser 98 to sporterize in the next week or so. i've heard of people welding or soldering the handle on, however, i am no good at all at O&A welding, nor silver soldering. i do know how to use a mig welder quite well, so if i turn the power way down should i be able to weld on a aftermarket handle with no problems, just have to grind it down and make it look good? thanks

If you can't weld really really well, this might be a better option.

Failing that, find a gunsmith and pay him to do it right.

You need to use the right rod, and you need to keep the bolt body cool to prevent heat migration from ruining the temper.

Most folks consider a bolt heat-sink a good investment before even attempting to weld on a bolt.
