I currently have a FN military "mauser" in 30-06 that has been semi sporterized by having a checkered turn down bolt handle welded on, rear sight removed, stock cutdown with a plastic buttplate installed and a Redfield reciever sight installed. The original front sight ramp was retained with a white bead job installed. The gun shoot very well with the current sights, about 1.5" at 100yards. Should I retain the original stepped barrel and put in a new Boyd's stock or install a new barrel? The barrel condition is pristine. Also on the issue of triggers, to current one is very heavy, would a Huber Concepts trigger help the situation or just give me an adjustable heavy trigger? I was going to go with a Buhler style saftey and have it D&T for a scope and call the project done. Either that or buy a M70 but since I've just been laid off, that doesn't seem prudent.:banghead:

If the barrel is fine I'd not worry about it. Any aftermarket trigger will make life better. I have heard both good and bad things about the Huber Concepts triggers so might want to look at some others as well. Though I will defer to those with first hand experience there. A Boyd's stock would work fine.

I have a VZ 24 I want to turn into a 35 Whelen for Elk hunting, but it is cheaper to buy a Tika than rebuild the VZ 24...

I figured that most of the hard metalwork was already done and since it has already been reblued, I was ahead of the $$ curve without a new barrel. It's just that the step profile kinda looks bubba'd. It wouldn't bee so bad if I could get a replacement rear sight.

I plan on going with a timney trigger on my mauser build... incredibly easy to install and adjust and a HUGE improvement.

boyds makes the bold trigger I can't wait to get my yugo 24/47 someday soon. I like the 8mm round and plan on forging the bolt, installing a bold trigger with a side safety, drilling and tapping, and dropping in a boyds jrs laminate stock!

boyds makes the bold trigger
These are the triggers I use, both the Optima and Deluxe. For an inexpensive stock try this <http://www.cdnninvestments.com/mauserstocks.html> in spite of the info to the contrary it WILL fit a military action.

I should have mentioned that I did find an adjustable trigger in my grandfathers pile of stuff and it looks like he did modify the stock for it. When I tried it, it seems like the cocking piece would have to be welded or trimmed (can't remember which) as although the pull was terrific, I couldn't engage the saftey. This is why I wanted to retain the original sear witht eh Huber job.

Do not mofify the sear in any way! Buy a Boyd's or Timney or any other aftermarket trigger. They are usually drop-in replacements. You can get one with a safety as part of the trigger assembly.

Yeah, the drop in replacement didn't work with the cocking piece, or striker, the sear would be replaced with a new trigger that didn't use the original sear, like a Boyds or Timniey or most other aftermarket triggers.

Are you sure that the Huber trigger is for a large ring Mauser? I've never had one not work with the existing cocking piece although I haven't used that particular trigger assembly. If you go with a trigger/safety combo, you will have to inlet the stock and relieve the bottom metal for the safety. I have three Colombian FN made Mauser 98s (all originally in 30.06)and they all work great with Boyd's Bold as well as Zastava factory triggers.

Maybe I need to clarify. I don't know the brand of the aftermarket trigger I tried. The Huber Concepts is for a large ring mauser and will pin into the existing sear. I want to retain the bolt shroud saftey so that the bolt locks in the closed position...so no triggers with safetys. I also do not want to spend the $ for a three position saftey to be milled into the existing shroud. The 6.5-06 40deg would be my choice for a custom rig, but this gun is just sitting here collecting dust and I wanted to turn it into something more sporting and selling it would not net more then the price of the action, and then that would be reduced because it has two holes in it for the reciever sight.

Very easily done, just get a Boyd's or Timney sans safety and add a Buehler style safety lever. It may require some fitting or may work right off.

if you'r getting 1 1/2" groups with the current barrel i wouldn't bother rebarreling it. to clean up the barrel i've made new sleeves to replace the original rear sight base on stepped barrel sporters. if the rear sight sleeve is removed and left as is it just looks unfinished to me.

as far a triggers go i would buy a bold before i would buy a huber but i prefer to spend a little more for a timney. i've had both bold and timney and if there is ever a problem with a timney they will take care of it.
