I have a 98 mauser action that came with a commercial 2 position safety for mounting a scope. The 2 position safety locks the bolt when safety is engaged not like the military 3-position flag safety that has a mid position that allows bolt to open. I like the bolt open feature and I can modify the tip of the 2 position safety to allow the bolt to open when safety is engaged either by grinding off a notch or even the complete tip. Is there anything wrong of doing it? It is pretty easy to do, but I don't think many has done it. Why? I cannot think of any occasion that I need to lock the bolt when safety is engaged. Why the safety is designed to lock the bolt when engaged? Commercial mauser side safeties do not do that!

I have a bunch of them and I've thought about doing the same thing. I still might. I know others who have done it and been happy with it.

Talk to some folks with current generation Remington 700 rifles. Ask them how the like finding their bolt open and the chamber empty when they unsling the rifle, or in some cases loosing the bolt, too. I've refitted two newer Remmys with the old style safety because of that problem.

The Mauser 98 three position safety can be modified to two position on SOME type of aftermarket or Modified Mauser safties.
For further information I would need to see which safety you have on your rifle.
It has to do with the shank that goes thru your Bolt Sleeve to lock the Bolt, and the method that retains the safety from falling out when in the Off position.
I use three types of aftermarket safeties on my custom Mausers, and also Modify the original safety to work as a Low Scope Safety.
There is also the option of installing a Bold or Timney trigger with a side safety.
