I got my Mav 88 out of poorman credit (layaway) Saturday (05-13-06) and on Sunday (Mother's Day) after I gave mom her card & presents, I announced (this time) that I was going to the shooting range. My mom, the one who got me my first 'real gun' informed me about a line of thunderstorms threatened the area and warned me about handling what amounts to be a three and a half foot lightening rod. I assured her that I had enough time before the line came in and I was off.

I get to the range and I met the owner who asked what type of shells I planned to use patterning the gun. I said I had a box of low based dove loads (#8s) and some high based #7 1/2s and a few #1 buck loads (cleaning out my gun locker). The owner told me not to use the dove loads because of "pop back" as in ricochets on the rubber tire back stop on the twenty five yard range where we pattern. This left me 15 shells to get the feel of the Maverick:confused: .

I did not want to buy more shells until I was sure the Mav functioned right. I go to the 25 yard range and the acting RO informed me I could only 'single load' my pump:scrutiny: . I informed him that this was a new gun and want to check it for function. Since I was a regular and nothing I shot went full auto (lately) he said I could load it up but time it about 15 to 30 seconds between shots. No problem.

I loaded the 7 1/2s and sighted down the barrel at the target.... and noticed something that I did not see mounting the shotgun in the store or at home.... the stock had no cast-off. With my cheek wield the two beads did not line-up!! I shot it anyway and it did pattern fairly well. The #1 buck shot low, but centered though ( this was through a screw-in Mod choke tube). The action was stiff at first but after the first ten shots the action felt smoother, no bobbles. I need to take it to the trap side to see what it does. BTW the trigger is a bit heavy almost 8 lbs is there a solution besides trading it in for a 500 ;).

I got all my shooting in and was back at the casa one hour before the sky fell but not before I went to the gunshop side of the range and was coerced in to buying (layaway again) a Colt Police Positive that was a good deal, but that story is for the revolver forum.

Run a few more boxes through it and see how the trigger feels. If it's still heavy, find a decent smith to fix it. Last one I had done was $50.

The heaviest trigger I'd tolerate would be a clean 5 lbs. Others may differ.

With a standard stock I have more of a jaw weld. Practice mounts at home WITH A SHOTGUN KNOWN TO BE EMPTY and see how things line up.

DM, I think it is a matter of getting used to a shotgun with a two bead set-up. I've always bought plain barrel shotguns this is a little new to me. A few boxes of shells may (or getting some snap-caps) may work the trigger down some. Wish South Zone Dove Season was closer, that would really give it a work-out.:D

OK. Two bead setups give a sight pic like a figure 8 for me. See how that works and get back to me. Thanks....
