Ok so I'm still shocked by this. I got one of those inexpensive plastic clip on fiber optic barrel sights for my Maverick 88. Cliped it on and then needed to push it forward a little so it would rest against the bead sight and stay aligned. Grabbed a rubber mallet (which is in good condition) and VERY gently tapped it forward. Great! I think. There are some small "marks" on the reciever where the rubber touch the barrel. Well low and behold they were not just transfer marks. The rubber from the mallet actually "erased" some of the bluing! I mean I was barely taping this thing.

I know what your thinking, I thought the same. Probably just rubber marks on the barrel get some alcohol and clean it off. Tried that as well as gun scrubber and some copper wool. Its actually partially removed some of the bluing from extremely mild and indirect blows from a rubber mallet. Couldn't believe how fragile the finish was.

Good for you on your care! Perspective...though you spent real money, a Maverick it is a low cost Mossy. My friends guilted my into buying a Mossy for duck hunting when they thought an used Remington 11 (yeppers 11, a knockoff of the early Browning auto...not an 1100!) was “too rich”...

As a tool, it will get nicked, beat, cursed, and used. Smile, and go have fun. It is a tool. And now it gives you a reason to go buy a prettier shotgun

Id just oil it and go on about my business.
If it really bugs you tho, hit it with some cold blue.

I find it odd the rubber mallet took the bluing off, I had a bunch of mossbergs, and even the 88s were actually blued pretty well, just poorly polished.

could you possibly have had any sort of acid on the mallet head? even vinegar can strip bluing.

It looks better worn.

See for yourself:

Wow that's definitely a bit of weirdness! Haven't had any kind of problem with the finish on my Maverick 88 but then again for the money I spent on it I was never expecting that great of a finish anyways. I would try some cold blue on the spot just to see how that works out.
