Golfing for Columbine
Welcome to the first THR invitational gun-golf tournament. This month’s match will be a shooting equivalent of a single hole of golf. Grab your driver (Rifle) and putter (handgun) and head out to the course (range). It’s a beautify day to “shoot a roundâ€!!
Target: Two targets are provided for the match. Target A is the “fairway†target and is the first target to be used. Target B is the “green†target and may only be used after an appropriate shot has been made on the fairway target. [See procedures for details]
Fairway Target
Green Target
Course: The course is a single hole of golf. The targets represent the fairway and green of a golf course hole. Instead of golf clubs and a ball you will use handguns and bullets.
Procedure:
Scoring: Just like golf, the final score will be the total number of rounds fired (strokes) until you get a shot in the hole plus penalties. Add the number of shots (strokes) needed on the fairway and the number of shots on the green for your total then add any penalties.
Fairway – The fairway target has several areas that your shot can hit. Each area will require a different action.
The trees/ rough/ Hazards/ water sand traps – If your shot lands in the trees or in any white area around the boarder of the fairway target you must add +1 penalty to your score and take another shot.
The Fairway – If a shot lands in the fairway area you shot again. No penalty.
The green – Once you land a shot on the green on the fairway target the shot counts and you move to the green target for the next shot. [Put your driver (rifle) back in the bag and get your putter (hangun) ready for use on the green.]
The hole – If you break the boarder of the hole on either target you are done. Add up your shots and penalties for your final score. You can get a ‘hole in one’ – it is possible. However, just like golf it is unlikely.
On The Green While on the green target there are three options for each shot:
The green – add a +1 stroke and shoot again. No penalty.
The hole - If you break the boarder of the hole you are done. Add up your shots and penalties for your final score.
Off the green – If you miss the green completely it will be scored as a +1 penalty in addition to your +1 stroke (just like a hazard on the fairway target).
For those who may be unfamiliar with golf - LOW SCORE IS BETTER!
Holds and support:
For this match all shots fired must be off-hand, unsupported with only one exception. The very first shot taken may be supported. This is your ‘tee-off’ shot. After you tee off you must shoot all rounds off-hand. Use of slings is acceptable.
Classes:
Tiger Woods Class – Fairway shots: Rifle, no-optics, 100yrds
Green Shots: Handgun, no optics, 25yrds
Arnold Palmer Class - Fairway shots: Rifle, W/optics, 100yrds
Green Shots: Handgun, w/ optics, 25yrds
Duffer Class (Rifle only) - Fairway shots: Rifle, no-optics, 50 yrds
Green Shots: Rifle, no optics, 25yrds
Mini-Golf Class (Handgun only) - Fairway shots: Handgun, no-optics, 25 yrds
Green Shots: Handgun, no optics, 10 yrds
Happy Gilmore Class (open) - Fairway shots: Any firearm, 50 yrds
Green Shots: Any firearm, 10 yrds
---------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE:
Tiger Woods Class – rifle and handgun
The fairway target is placed out at 100yrds.
The first shot is fired (Tee off) with a rifle from sandbags, on a bench. This shot lands on the fairway. Score +1.
The second shot is fired at 100yrds off-hand, standing, with a sling, which lands on the fairway but breaks the edge of a sand trap hazard. Score +1 and Penalty +1 [cumulative total = 3]
The third shot is fired at 100yrds, off-hand, standing, with sling, which drops cleanly on the green. Score +1 [cumulative total = 4]
The green target is placed at 25yrds. The rifle goes back into the bag and out comes the handgun putter.
The first shot on the green falls on the green but misses the hole. Score +1 [cumulative total = 5]
The second shot on the green breaks the hole!! Score +1 [cumulative total = 6]
Total # shots = 5
Penalties = 1
Total score = 6
---------------------------------------------------------------
TIPS: It is recommended that those who want to try “Tiger Woods†or “Arnold Palmer†classes spring for a golf cart (or a good spotting scope). You will need to check the location of each shot before you can fire again. It could be hard to find your ball at 100 yards.
Note that the course “gun pro†recommends a small caliber ‘driver’ due to the hazards on the fairway and a large caliber ‘putter’ when on the green to help you get into the hole.
Number of Entries
Each shooter is allowed to make three entries total from any class. Each entry must be different firearms if in the same class. So if you want to shoot different guns all in the same class, go for it. If you want to shoot one entry in each of three different classes that is OK also.
