I met a gentleman a few months back that is constantly turning up with firearms of different design and size as well as price tag. He is knowledgeable on most fire arms and make a point of letting everyone know he is a member of THE RNA right off the top. He make his living buying and selling guns to anyone with the money. But lately I've noticed that whatever he sails automatically has a price tag that is out of the world and most of the weapons are in need o of maintenance or repair to one degree or the other. Now there are a group of us that will haggle and buy/sell with each other ever weekend. I have notice and see him doing something that that makes me wonder about his ethics. He sold a hand gun to a man and he could not even remember the gun he sold and had no idea who the person was that bought the gun; I understand that an individual can transfer/sell/but from other independent persons without keeping logs as to where they come from or where they go. It came to my Attention that this person has in fact been selling and repairing guns that actually convicted felons. Who by the written law are not legally authorized to own or have on their person a fire arm.

I am wondering if I should shorting my visit's to see this man because I know the AFT has no since of humor when dealing with firearms. And I am too darn old to have handcuff on my skinny wore out arms. Sure don't want to spend the night at a local establishment. Last time I visited the doors there had a tendencies to stick shut. Should I be concertinaed:D and just end the friendship of let this ride out to its end.
 
If your kinda pretty with school boyish looks id cut him off from the herd. Nahh, just kidding they dont care what you look like in prison.

This is just me, But since ive almost made it to 40 years old. I don't have the time and patience for idiots and the stupid things they do, And the longer your around them the more it will rub off on you and you wont even notice.

In reality tho, As long as you do no business transactions with him and avoid being in the vicinity when he does do one id say your in the clear, Kinda. As at one point you may need a lawyer to prove that for you.

You are making a potentially dangerous assumption here. Do you KNOW this, as 100% FACT? Does he have an FFL? If the former is yes, and the latter is NO, then there is a problem.

The fact that you posted this question, and thereby have knowledge of a crime: his selling firearms to known felons, if I understood correctly; as well as "apparently" buying and selling firearms to conduct business and not as an occasional purchaser or seller (without an FFL I assume), IS going to create problems, possibly for BOTH of you.

What you do in regards to your friendship is your business, but be aware IF he is operating outside the law, and you have "prior knowledge", you may be a material witness, or worse.

Yes, the BATFE's bad sense of humor on these issues is NOT very colorful, has been well known, and well documented, for a long, long time. Pay heed. Just my .02

Keep him at arm's length, a LONG arm, at the very least. If he is too stupid to realize what he's doing, you are best served to either tell him, or walk away. If he KNOWS what he's doing, then you are better off to just walk away. Do what you think and feel is right. But, how close of a friend is he? Someone you're willing to share a cell with? Take a shank for, or worse? Food for thought. Your call.

Thanks guys I had already made up my mind that it was time to end all realationship with him and his transactions. I too have sold a few weapons but always required an Id and list who and where it went, along with the date. Just this last transaction made me raise an eyebrow.

Wise decision.

There is absolutely NO need to associate with individuals you deem may be conducting unlawful activities.

There are PLENTY of law abiding citizens to associate with.

I'd stay out of the affairs of others. I would distance myself from the friendship if I were under the impression that associating with a person could get me in legal trouble, gun-related or not. As a law-abiding citizen I would not knowingly participate in the cover-up of a federal felony. Nor would I accuse someone of such (to the authorities or even on the internet) without having evidence, nor would I go looking for such evidence since that's not my job.

Just for your situational awareness, you've pretty much accused this guy of violating fed-gov statutes regarding making a living selling guns without being a Federal Firearms Licensee.
 
If I legitimately knew the buyer to be a felon, I'd be more likely to anonymously report that I knew said felon was in possession of a firearm (and a description of said firearm) without mentioning where he got it. If the buyer rolls over on the seller, that's between them.
 
Lots of folks here buy and sell guns frequently. There is no limit in my state of how many you can buy or sell. Do you know FOR SURE he is selling to convicted felons?

Sounds like you know an awful lot about his personal business. :confused:

Don't get suspicions confused with facts.
 
I don't find this that hard a question. Why associate with anyone who's making you uncomfortable for any reason?

Whether it's someone who's a loudmouth drunk, a guy who's got an eye for little girls, or someone who's engaging in what you suspect are questionable gun sales, if someone is making you feel uneasy there's generally something to it. Going a step further, if you have a solid basis for your belief that someone is committing a felony, report it.

A group of "old boys" who informally traded and sold guns ended up in court and some in jail over a peripheral member of their group who went from hobby to business selling to the wrong folks to selling to an undercover ATF agent. To reduce the weight landing on him this guy implicated everyone he could think of. You don't want to end up ruined and/or in jail over someone you suspect being involved with something illegal.
 
The question is; are you guilty by association? In today’s anti-gun climate with people of questionable intelligence sitting on juries, I’d say the risk is too great to keep up the friendship.

It’s a shame gun nuts can’t enjoy the hobby as we used to in the past.
 
There was a guy kind of like that around here.
He sold many guns to anybody with cash at gunshows and at home for years and years.
The feds never bothered to prosecute him for something as vague as doing business in firearms without a license, they just waited until they had a higher profile case. They eventually nailed him for selling to 1. a minor 2. from out of state. The parents put in the official complaint about Junior coming in with guns.

He was well known and generally well liked, everybody knew what he was up to. The feds never gave his friends, associates, and previous customers any trouble over his prior activities.
 
This man may or may not have actually violated written laws, but to me it was more of an ethical issue. For many years I had a friend that was just about old enough to be my father and that is how I looked at him, he was my sounding board from everything to serious to ridicules issues. He is now gone now so I guess I use this board to sound off, not trying to create issues but I have had many great comments that will at least put me into a different thought pattern. To all thank you for your thoughts and allowing me this avenue of conversation.
 
Are you REQUIRED to ask if someone is a convicted fellon before making a private transfer? Is it technically a crime to SELL a gun to a convicted fellon or is it only a crime if you KNOWINGLY sell a gun to a convicted fellon?

Is it like don't ask, don't tell?
 
Dangerous Assumption Is Correct-

If overly concerned [which apparently you are]; the best for all parties,
would be for you too mind your own business IMHO. Playing go-between
your compadre and the ATF is a dangerous game; and rest assured you
won't be the winner~! :scrutiny: :uhoh: ;)
