MBC Elmer K feeding in a rifle

The test packet is a good idea. Since we do not know anything about your rifle it is difficult answer your question.

I am going to order some MBC Elmer K bullets soon.

I'll likely order a test packet first before buying a larger quantity. I want to use these in a rifle. Anyone have any feed issues using these in a lever action rifle ?

Thanks

-Jeff
My Winchester runs Keith/SWC type bullets and **most** of my Henry's...as long as you work the action smartly. Most of my Marlin's are spotty, but workable with technique. I prefer RNFP in all calibers in the repeaters, and save the Keith/SWC types for the revolvers. YMMV.

I have a Rossi Puma that doesn't care for Lyman 429421 loaded normally. I experimented with different seating depths and 44 Special brass and a few other tricks but none would allow 100% easy feeding. I went to a Ranch Dog RNFP in 240 and 265 gr. Problem solved...

Maybe I’m making it all harder than it needs to be. I want to work up a hunting bullet to use in a new rifle. Will be used for deer 100 yards and in, probably 50-80 typically. Most folks say a special hollow point hunting bullet is not needed, and stick with a wide lead bullet for 45 Colt. So, I was thinking about trying these SWC Keith style but maybe I don’t even need to do that. Has anyone hunted with the coated RNFP from MBC ? The flat tip on the RNFP measures about .31-.33 is that wide enough ? They feed fine in my Henry.

Never had a problem with SWC in my .357 Mag Henry as far as feeding. Accuracy? It was no-go.

Can't say for sure on the 45 colt but I expect it would do fine feeding.

Deer? You do your part, a 250 grain RNFP is gonna put the deer down no problem, especially if your loading at tier 2 levels. There are also lots of JSP type bullets out there, bonded core bullets, all kinds of jacketed purpose built hunting bullets. It all depends on how hot you plan to load it, but I'd suggest to you that over the past 150 years, 45 Colts have killed a LOT of deer.

Standard 45 Colt pressures. No Ruger only nonsense.

So out of a carbine then you're looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 to maybe 1200 or so for a 250 grain projectile depending on a lot of variables (powder, conditions, how close to that 14K PSI cap you're going to get, etc). From a terminal perspective, there's no real difference between a SWC or an RNFP on game. So it's going to come down to which one a) functions the best in your fifle, and b) which one is most accurate in your rifle. So I'd get a few of each for testing, see where they are at in your particular gun. The RNFP is the safest as far as it's 100% going to run in your gun. You may get a bit better accuracy out of the SWC, but that's not a guarantee. My personal choice would be the RNFP, and when I've hunted with 45 Colt or 44 Magnum carbines, that's generally what I use.
