ive been a bit under the weather this week and havent been able to get to the workshop to grind on knives...i got a bit bored and had a knife sitting there and a bag of popcans...thought i would give it a try since i had been planning on doing it for the fun of it for awhile

the images are thumbnails so can be enlarged by clicking

as i said this type of stuff is done mainly for fun. the knife actually isnt good for the tasks i wanted it to perform (camp chores, chopping) its fast in the hand but not right for chopping. the next model will be a bit wider with the balance point further up to aid in chopping. it probably will slow it down a bit so wont cut waterfilled popcans as well, but will do what i intended it for much better.

Reminds me of those tamashigiri (rolled up japanese straw mats) slicing tests conducted using katanas and Angus Trim boardswords.

thanks...i liked the pics :D they are actually stills from a video i took. again keep in mind this is for fun...slicing through pop bottles doesnt prove much about a knife besides its sharp.

the knife is a screwup i did. i wasnt fond of the dots i did along the blade and then the handle got a hairline crack on me (its maple overtop of abalone with copper tube pins) so this one is destined to either be a camp knife for me or tested to destruction. halfway through the handle when the crack formed i just stopped working on the knife and sharpened it up.
its 12 1/2" long, 3/16" a2, 1 1/2" wide, balance point just in front/under first finger.

i also tried some 2litre bottles. could only fit 4 on my table(a cooler) at a time..this pic was taken after i had completed the cut and picked them up off the ground.

for any of you that have a knife and some popcans laying around...this is some fun stuff :D

OK dude...if you feel good enough to be doing that...... you NEED TO BE GRINDING KNIVES! :D

Glad to see your feeling better. But I have to ask.... How do you explain your hatred of cans and plastic bottles?

thanks guys. yeah im feeling much better jim...i went and ground on some blades today. one of these days ill even get the 5 rivets im waiting on and get your sheath done!

as for my can hatred...id rather not talk about it...lets just say it was an unfortunate accident with one of those automatic popcan recyclers...when they say dont stick your hand in there they mean it. i would go after the machine itself but grocers frown upon that..so im working on cutting off its food supply.
