I'm a huge fan of first person shooter computer games. With most of them, though, I find myself wishing they were more realistic. Not extremely so, but mainly, I find weak weapons annoying.

Take Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Great plot, cool twists, awesome FG42. But could you just mow down the Nazis? Naw, 'cuz each guy took between 3-10 hits to drop, depending on the weapon.

Another game I love is Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Spearhead. There are PLENTY of "realism" mods out there that make it so the Garand doesn't take 3 shots (center of mass) to kill an unarmored German soldier at point blank range (more like 6 or 7 hits with a subgun). But, nearly every one I can find is multi player only.

So...

Maybe some High Road players out there can help me. I'm looking for a realism mod that'll work in single player, that will make the weapons in the SP game perform better. MORE POWER! The Garand and Mauser rifles should, typically, drop badguys with one hit (especially at close range). The SMGs shouldn't take seven to eight hits, either.

Does anybody know of any such mod? Preferably one that'll work with Allied Assault, but a spearhead-only one would be okay too.

Thanks.

(Mods...I know this is kind of stretching the on-topic requirement a bit, but I *am* asking about game firearms... :D )

Skip MoH and go download "Call of Duty" demo. This is what MoH should have been. Smart squad movements, the ability to pick up any dropped weapons, and best of all you can actually aim via the sights. Its around 170 Megs so it might be rough on a 56ker but its well worth using a file manager to get.

Here's a couple semi-secret things I have found.

-When you first start you run across a small field and take some mortor rounds. If you stay on the left side some unfortunate fellow jumps into a crater only to have another round hit him. If you look closely you will find he was carrying the BAR. (only place I have found it)

- At the second German AA position try and draw the fire fight out longer. As the fight continues you will notice more Nazi's comming from the right flank and reinforcing that position. If you wait long enough you will see a couple guys (in camo I think) that will have the FG42 in a sniper config.

-Make sure to get close to one of the mortor explosions atleast once as it does a nice "Saving Private Ryan" effect.

Sadly this is only a single player demo with the full version not slated for release for a couple more months. The animation is simply amazing with realistic use of cover, windows and door ways. If they can pull off the same feel for the full version I have a feeling they will have a hit on thier hands.

i think what you are asking about is altering the scripts that govern what goes on in the game itself. its not impossible to change, but it would take some work.
there is at least one map that while is meant to be multiplayer, has bots that you can play against. if you're running the map on your 'server' you can play it against the bots, against however many bots you program in, and you can have bots of your own on your team. so its like a team deathmatch but against the computer.
i havent played it myself, but my friends who have say its pretty good.

have you tried using the cheats on the game? i like doing god mode and having all weapons. the supppressed pistol is fun to kill with. if you like only play, punch this IP in 199.240.91.211:12203

omaha beach, rifles only, with as much anti-cheats running as possible. really a fun server. look for DieS members there, thats my clan, i am AEONflux.

Double what SeaG said.
I play a little DoD, but not after Call of Duty comes out.

So far as BAR's go in the demo, there is another that will pop up after you blow the 2nd flakvierlung; unfortunatly, he won't die and give up his gun unless you drop a grenade on him yourself, which is kinda uncool...

The FG42 is really spiffy, gamewise. (I'd like to have one IRL, but originals are expensive as heck, no-one seems to make repro's, and they are illegal in my state anyway.)

My big beef is that the little M2 carbine seems almost as lethal as the Garand. I know that it is very undesireable to get shot with anything, but honestly, there seems to be no functional difference in the game between the two except that the M2 reloads faster and recoils less.

I jus finished MOHAA and Spearhead. Talk about addictive. I too, had a beef with the Garand taking 3 shots to drop a BG and mulitple .45 tommy gun hits to drop a bg, but can you imagine how hard some of the scenarios would be if one hit from a sniper dropped you? You wouldn't even know where it came from.

Call of Duty looks absolutely sick. I'm thinking about an Alienware system to get the gaming experience. My PIII 600 is getting dated.

Just finished MOHAA, too. :D

The last scene was the hardest. Fire and brimstone falling all around as the mustard gas plant collapses behind you.

A dozen or so Nazi BG's making certain you don't get out alive. Whew! Talk about a grand exit! :D

I never really expected one-shot kills to occur except for the shotgun and the '03 rifle. I just kept firing away with all I had! ;)

But it does help to aim for the head.

If you want the realism to a point that your M1 rifle is dropping germans with one round then your going to have to accept that their k98's are going to do the same to you. Games that kill you with one round from the enemy tend to be frustrating. I mean if you wanted a super realistic game you could stay 300 meters from the enemy and just take pot shots in their general direction the whole time. That would be far more realistic than anything out there. It would just be really boring.

In other words, in order for war to be "fun" it has to REALLY streatch realism in the first place.

What I hated about the game was the unlimited bad guy scenarios...jeez. And some parts sure felt like trial and error.

I loved the M1 *ping* and wish it were in the gun more...the Thompson and '03 were kinda boring. I sure loved filching the German guns though.

Okay, I just finished the Call of Duty demo level and it was simply awesome. It's everything you like about MOH:AA multiplied by some. Iron sights, M1 carbine folder, K98, FG42, Thompson, fixed MG42, ...

Badguys move and duck behind cover, don't walk into your fire, etc. When you run out in front of your buddies, they lay down cover fire, etc.

You need this game. I'm gonna log off and play it again, with a grin.

Yes, and the Krauts will also bash your head in if you're not careful....

Make your own realism mod. Take one that you like the settings for in multiplayer, and rename the .pk3 file into a zip. Open it with winzip and extract the contents to a temp folder (using folder names). There will be a weapons folder that has a bunch of .tik folders for the weapons (in spearhead at least it will be a models directory with a weapons directory in it, can't remember with regular MOHAA). Open those .tiks with notepad, and you will see seperate sections for multiplayer and singleplayer weapon damage and accuracy settings (sp bulletdamage and dm bulletdamage in spearhead). Change all the singleplayer ones to the values for the multiplayer, or come up with your own with some tweaking. After you've saved everything, make a new empty zip file. Go back to the base directory you extracted everything to and drag the folder over (the models folder for spearhead) and add it the zip. (You have to get the directory stuff done right or the mod won't do anything, just adding the .tiks to the zip wouldn't keep the directory structure right). Then rename the zip to zzzuser-whatever and rename the zip to pk3, and put it in your game's main directory, removing the old realism mod (the name starting with zzzuser something like that to assure it loads in the proper sequence.) That does the ticket... I like settings with the M1 and Mauser damage settings up around 105 + or so...

Mess around with it, you'll figure it out

The MPSH 3.1 mod for Spearhead already has the singleplayer settings the same as multiplayer. It however still has some of them set too low (like it has the M1 at 103 but the BAR at 75), that's the best base to start editing from most likely, just do a few fixes for realism like the BAR there and you're good to go. I seem to recall having some complaints with their accuracy settings in MPSH too, mess around with that too... I had a mod I did up all nice to suit me but I'll be darned if I can find it now, haven't played in awhile I guess I deleted it... If you can't figure it out the MPSH 3.1 settings are still way better than the stock game's settings, just use it if you can't figure out how to edit them yourself. I don't know if the singleplayer settings are changed in other versions of MPSH, I seem to recall at least one version I looked at wasn't... Yes, these stages do frustrate the player. You'd really have to be very conscious of the alarm being set off. One of them BG's somewhere has spotted you and tripped the alarm. You have to take him out before he does so. ;)

Call of Duty is definitely going to set a new standard. It doesn’t seem to take as many hits to drop an enemy as with MoH.

Has anyone played MoH multiplayer lately. I stepped away from the game for a few weeks and now there seems to be much fewer servers. What’s up? Is there a newer version I need to patch too?

What I’d like to see is an online WW2 type game that’s ongoing like Planetside or Everquest. I think there is one called WW2 online, but if I rember right, the graphics looked cheesy and the game didn't take off.

MAKOwner, I got it, and have made my own .pk3 file. It just doesn't seem to affect the game, is all, even though I've adjusted the single player weapons values.

I'll keep messing with it, though. I found a realism mod for Spearhead that I like; but between Alliled Assault and Spearhead, I like the AA missions better.

Nightcrawler,

Open a DOS window, go to the directory the file is in and use the rename command "ren". Example: C:\Temp\ren mod.pk3.zip mod.pk3

fivepaknh, i play every day, at least 3 hours. yes i have no social life.
try getting into this IP: 66.98.131.173

the maps are technically stock, but have entirely different objectives. one map has the teams trying to steal the others beer, first team to steal all six beers wins. another has a toilet that you have to pickup and carry, the longer you hang on to it without dying the more points your team racks up.

another has objs for both teams to set explosives, but adds a new twist. if a player gets shot, they become POW's and are immediately teleported to a holding cell. they are released if a teammate comes by and kills the guard. you exit the cell and theres a weapons cache nearby so they can rearm themselves. blowing up the objs doesnt win the game. being the first team back to your spawn after the explosives go off wins.

theres a mod in omaha that picks up allies on the beach and drops them off behind axis lines, really cool. a boat will pick you up and drop you off wayyyy down the beach so you can snipe the bunkers and few will know where you are.

i dont have the IPs of other servers, but i look for 'waffen', 'omaha forever', 'rotp', 'stud servers', to name a few.

If it's not affecting it, you probably made an error with the directories when putting them back in the zip. If you open the zip with winzip (and I would assume some way to view the paths in other zip programs too), and scroll to the right side it should have a path field, all the weapons.tik files should be in the path "models\weapons\". If not that is the problem. You also need to have it named something like zzuser-myrealism.pk3 , try just plain user-myrealism.pk3 too if you don't have a ton of userpk3s in there. Otherwise it may not be loading in the proper sequence, I forget which it is but if the mod doens't load before or after the game pk3 files, the changes won't override the games stock settings...

And make sure you have actually changed the extensions to pk3 too, windows may be hiding them and the file may really still be .pk3.zip or something.... In file explorer, under tools>folder options, on the view tab there is a option for "hide extensions for know filetypes" or something like that, make sure it's unchecked...

Or, alot of these mods have multiple lines for the damage settings, with different values to keep a record of version changes. Make sure the line you're editing doesn't have slash marks out in front of it, or something similar, that would void that line...

Oh, and make sure you don't have more than one realism mod still in the mainta directory for spearhead, or main for mohaa (and for spearhead mods it could be a problem with one being in the /main directory used for mohaa too, sometimes I've had crosshair mods and stuff in that directory that carried over to spearhead too...)

What zip program are you using? I suppose it may be doing something to the files that hoses them, I've always just used Winzip with no problems...

I solved the problem of it saving my files as "mikemod.pk3.zip", and now have them back to .pk3. The directories, as near as I can figure, are identical to the working mod I'm copying them from, but I'll dicker some more to make sure I'm getting it all.

I'm just using the program that came with Windows 98. I like it better than Winzip, because with winzip I had a harder time saving hte modified files into the proper directories.

Thanks for your help, at any rate.

WAIT! The hyphenated name! I wasn't doing that! Let me try that!!

Ok just played through the Call of Duty demo, althought not bad I have one complaint. What's with only having 10 rounds in the M1 Carbine mag? Every other gun has a full load why not the carbine?

Ok, just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I went in to monkey around and make another mod since it's been awhile.

I couldn't get it to work either, and was about to pull my hair out when I figured it out. To test it you're probably loading up a saved game, instead of starting a fresh campaign and sitting through the opening movies and stuff right? Well, that is what I was doing anyway. It turns out for some reason for the mods to work you have to start a new campaign, for whatever reason trying to load up a saved game that didn't have the realism mod when you saved it before doesn't work, it doesn't recognize the changes. So assuming you do have the directory structure crap right, and the file extension changed, you should be good to go then... To make sure you've got the mods working just set the colt45 and m1 down to do 1 damage, load up a new campaign and you can pump rounds into the enemy all day long and kill no one... Then go back and make the changes to what you really want... Downside is it looks like you'll have to start playing the games from the beginning making new saved games...

If that wasn't it and you still can't get it to work, just give me the values you want to use for all the guns and I'll make you a mod, test it and send it to you.

Hey thanks! Lemme give it a test. I like to rename the weapons, too. "M1911A1" instead of "Colt .45" and so on.

EDIT: IT WORKED! THANKS! One caveat, though. I changed the name of the pistol from "Colt 45" to "Colt M1911A1". The pistol peformed as I had programmed it to, but the in-game model couldn't be seen. Apparently the weapons need to retain their original names in order to work properly, or something.

Hmm, I don't know about the name changing, never tried to mess with that, don't know if there is a way to do it without messing anything up or not... All I've ever messed with is the damage and accuracy stuff... Just messing around now I changed the line below from "Colt 45" to "M1911A1" and it worked, the model showed up and everything, however the ammo counter over on the right of the screen next to the name did not. I actually don't mind that... Is that the line you changed? This was in spearhead, I didn't try it in regular mohaa, maybe that is where you tried it and that is the difference? Beats me, like I said haven't messed with it before...

Code:
		classname Weapon
		weapontype pistol
		name "Colt 45"
		rank 110 110

Call of Duty uses the same engine base as mohaa, although modified/updated for better graphics and such. Mods and editing are very similar, and in some cases even easier for it... So I whipped up a mod to fix the mag size to 15 real quick, take it and put it in the \main directory of the call of duty demo directory. www.dcpnet.org/stuff/zzuser-carbinemagfix.pk3 Don't know if as with the mohaa stuff if you have to start the mission over, or if you can pick up halfway through with a saved game and this still work... Since this is only one mission in the demo it shouldn't be a big deal...
