Location
Fairbanksan in Aleutian Hell
Some of the local folks panicked when these guys showed up.
The pics were taken from about 75 yrds away the (closest) out to about 150 yrds on 3x zoom. I took 31 photos. I've posted the ones with most detail.
The location is between two sections of town. I was standing on the road next to my vehicle while traffic was going by me. This is one of two sows w/3 cubs in an area of 1.5 sq. mi.
Directly behind me down an embankment below the road are houses spread along the shoreline of the cove.
The sow is at least 800# or better and the cubs are in the 400# range. They are last year's cubs and were like little pups last spring. The sow will probably kick them loose this fall.
Those are the fabled alder bushes everyone talks about. They blend in with the grass and alders real well now. When it greens up they'll be totally blocked from view.
These aren't the only bears that are going to show up this year. I'll better pics on my next encounters.

Great pics and thanks for all the info.

I took down my birdfeeders over the weekend, too many bad experiences with blackies on my deck.

Just for laughs, the closest I have ever been to a bear was a couple years ago when I was awakened by a crashing noise. I got out of bed and went downstairs still half asleep and wearing nothing but a pair of underwear. I turned on the outside light and saw that there were pieces of birdfeeders every. After I made sure the intruder was gone, I walked out onto the deck.

Now...our deck turns into a wrap around porch that's shaped like a ], but with the horizontal lines being longer, and with the top line being the deck.

So I walked out onto the deck and turned the corner and walked onto the porch part, only to find a black bear behind the BBQ eating seeds 2 feet away from me. I'll just say I left in a hurry. (The bear was un-phased and continued to sit there until I cracked the window it was leaning against and started "moo-ing" at it.....don't ask why.....it left soon after)

People that live in Alaska panic when bears come to visit

Next they will be alarmed when a moose walks through town.

Three cubs?I though that that was rare?

Awesome pics though.

:D & to think I get excited when a cardinal or bluejay comes into my yard.

great pics

thanks!
i get excited (happily) when i see our local red tail hawks and owls and the occasional bobcat (rare) and foxs. that must be real fun.
