I was sitting in my blind yesterday watching the squirrels when a big crow landed in a pine about 60 yards away, in a few minutes there was 5 or 6 on the ground at the feed pile with others flying in and out and more gathering, I watched for a few minutes then shot the first crow who was on overwatch, after about a 10 minute ruckus they all left...they got the message 20231125_081227.jpg 20231125_085421.jpg 20231125_085412.jpg

Here in Wisconsin, crow season is closed during the gun deer season. Not to protect the birds, but to protect others, as the state does not allow, for safety reasons, the shooting of game birds(especially sitting in trees)with rifles. We also cannot hunt deer over feed piles. Just the way it is. As a kid I grew up hunting crows in late winter/early spring when everything else was closed. To this day I can still call crows using only my mouth. Comes in handy during Turkey season too. Used to have a Drahthaar that would sit by me when I called and would turn his head in the direction of a crow coming in, before I could see the bird thru the trees. Just like he was pointing a pheasant. Don't know how he knew a crow was coming, but he did.

Having crows at your feed pile is a good thing. Crows are good sentry's, and if they are around any deer in the area will feel more secure. I would not disturb the crows as they will warn off any game in the area that something is not right in the area and there is danger.

We have Ravens, they will follow and circle above herds and bands of Caribou, and let you know where the animals are from a distance.
They will also shadow Wolves, as scavengers.

They will also eat the guts and if you set a trap nearby, the Ravens feeding and circling, awaiting their turn, will bring predators and scavengers AKA "Fur" to the site before long.

North Carolina has the most ignorant convoluted crow season that most of us who do follow the rest of the game book just ignore it. May to August its closed but the rest its open wed. Fri. And sat. And a host of random holidays.

All the rest of our reasons make sense....they open xx-xx-xxxx and close xx-xx-xxxx. But for whatever reason crow season is just stupid. Lol

Our bait rules are odd too. You can shoot a deer with your corn or any other bait in his mouth. You can shoot a bear over corn or natural bait but not candy or sweetened bait. Amd a turkey you have to remove all bait 2 weeks before season starts..... lol

Our bait rules actually make sense to me. Bears and turkeys are much more competitive among hunters, and our turkeys are already under immense pressure from deforestation and coyotes so giving them a chance to outsmart hunters without being baited seems logical.

I’m with you on the crowd though, and I don’t even shoot them.

Candy is prohibited because the bears get addicted and will eat only candy till they starve
