Mich. Police Get Bigger Pistols

Not every police official agrees. Capac Chief Raymond Hawks said his officers carry a mix of 9 mm, .40 and .45 caliber. He carries a 9 mm and said it is the officer's ability to use the weapon that makes the difference.

"My theory is carry what you can shoot," he said. "My main concern is that they're accurate with what they carry."

Most intelligent comment yet.

If my backup is 40 to 50 minutes away and I'm involved in a shootout, whether my handgun is a 9mm, 40 or 45 is much less of a concern than how many loaded 30 round mags I have for my AR.

Amen to that.

Although, somebody really should make a HP 9mm round. Maybe load it up to come close to .357 ballistics out of the same barrel legnth. Nah, that'd NEVER happen.

Sounds like another case of "caliber envy" to me.

Dammit people, it's not the size of the bullet, it's what you DO with it that counts.

Shot placement! Shot placement! Shot placement!:banghead:

Aim where it counts! Hit what you aim at, every time! Repeat as necessary until the threat is eliminated! If you can do it with a .45, great. If you can do it with a 9mm, also great. Train until you can do it right, every time. Then keep training some more.

Chief Hawks' quote in that article is the only one that makes any sense.

Maybe the real reason police departments are moving to the larger calibers is so that the officers will be carrying less ammo, so when they shoot (and miss, as they are often reported to do) there will be, statistically speaking, less stray rounds flying around downrange.

Look on the bright side: more police trade-in SIG 9mm's for sale soon...:D
