anyone know what the exact military specification (or John M. Browning-specification) velocity is for .45 acp ammo? also, anyone know of a current manufacturer that is making mil (or Browning) spec velocity ammo in 45 acp? thanks.

According to my copy of Cartridges of the World, to duplicate the military ball load, you would use 5.0 grains of Bullseye powder with a 230 grain FMJ bullet for a muzzle vel. of 850 fps. From what I've read, the 850 fps is the standard for this cartridge over the years.
I also have a empty box from 1975 that held WCC Match .45 ACP mfg by the Olin Corp. On the side it confirms they were 230 grain bullets loaded to a velocity of 820 fps which is similar to the regular ball load.
I would imagine the WWB that WalMart sells is loaded to the 850 fps range, but someone out there with a chronograph or the Winchester specs could probably confirm that.

Had a friend whose son shot himself in the big toe with a .177 air pistol (bare feet). All it did was cut a nice wadcutter hole in the nail of his big toe and lodge itself against the bone.....what do you think a .45 would have done?
Of course, he was none to happy about the hole in his toe and that he spent the next week soaking it to stave off infection.

Quite number of years ago (in a Souteast Asian country) I was hit in the shoulder/chest with a .45 ACP round. I'm here to tell you that it was like getting hit by a Bus. If I had my chouce, I'd MUCH rather get hit with a .22 pellet from an air gun...

These may not be in keeping with most published load data today, so use whatever degree of caution you feel comfortable with.
Personally, I have always liked 6.0 grains Unique myself.
It shoots to the same point of impact as GI ball, and throws cases in the same pile in my guns.
BTW: I won't even bother to comment on the air-gun comment.
You either understand big slow moving bullets, or you don't.

Average velocities for 230gr FMJ handlaods that I've ran over the chronograph:
6.2grs of Unique pushes Remington 230gr FMJ's out the end of both my Government models and Commander a little to the plus side of 850 fps, 6.5grs is approaching 900 fps.
5.5grs of W231 runs just below 800 fps from the same guns with the same bullet.

According to a quick unit conversion, that is 545mph. Not exactly slow.
A 230gr pill moving at 800fps hits with 327lb-ft of impact energy. A typical air gun in the .177 range hits with less than 10.
A 55gr .223 pill moving at 3000fps delivers almost 1100.
327lb-ft is nothing to sneeze at. If you weighed 165lbs, you'd have to stand on the end of a 2ft handle to remove a bolt torqued to this amount.
Pathetic? I don't want to get shot with a .45ACP.
