Accurate 5744 will get you there. I just don't know how well the lead bullets will handle being pushed that fast. I am in the same exact boat as you. I cast a 270 SAA hollow point plain base bullet from wheel weights with white label carnuaba red lube. 26.0 grains of 5744 gave me 1070 fps from my Smith 460 xvr. I shot a sierra 240 jacketed bullet over 33.0 grains for 1265fps and over 38.0 grains for 1431fps. The cast bullet at 1070 felt like a trail boss load and was only a bit faster than my trail boss loads with a lighter bullet. The 240 sierra at 1200-1400 is much more stout than trail boss loads, but I could still fire single handed very easily. It was much easier to shoot than 45.0 grains of win 296 and a hornady 240 xtp mag.
5744 can be safely downloaded without fillers and can give almost as much velocity as 296/110. The only drawback is that it usually doesn't burn completely-just the nature of the beast-as many people have reported.
I am going to probably try 33.0 and 36.0 grains with my 270 bullet. The lube I use is said to easily work in up to 2700 fps loads, but that is with gas checks and also depends on the bullet fitting the gun properly.
I also shot a 250 copper plated bullet over 27.0 grains of 5744 and got 1027fps. It was a very mild load and needs to be bumped up.
My goals were to use trail boss for light loads (under 1100fps), 5744 for 1100-1900fps, and 296 for 1900+fps. I bought an 8 pound jug of trail boss, so I don't see a point in wasting my 5744 for a load that TB will cover. I was really having fun with those 1200-1400fps loads last weekend. It is a nice compromise between the hot load that costs me 75 cents each to load, and the very slow trail boss loads. TB is still nice for some relaxed plinking. I do shoot 45lc since I have the brass, but I load on the light side to keep the wear down on the gun, and keep a brush handy to clean up the cylinder as I go.
