Mini 14 Hannibal Rail

My government induced 3 day waiting period expired today so I picked up the Mini and brought her home. I really like the look and feel of it but the heat shield on the barrel is the most butt ugly thing I have ever seen so I started looking for something to replace it with. The most interesting thing I found was called a Hannibal Rail from Samson Manufacturing. It is a picatinny style rail that mounts to the front barrel support so it should be solid for anything I may decide to mount on it optic wise and it doesn't interfere with the factory site plane. Does anyone have any experience with this or is there another good alternative?

There were some companies selling rather attractive wood replacement guards, similar to what the very earliest Minis came with from the factory. Don't know what availability is like now.

I use the UltiMak Rail on a Mini-30. The Hannibal Rail has some features the UltiMak doesn't, but both are top of the line... better than other options.

Nightlord: Thanks for that last link. I really like the black one as the stock on my mini looks like it has black tiger stripes. I thought it was an aftermarket but the butt plate is black rubber with the Ruger logo in the center.

I replaced the fugly factory hand guard with one from Choate, much better looking, light weight, and inexpensive.

Hannibal rail works very well. Or add the wood handguard if you want to go old school.
