Dad just got a Mini14. Only came with a 5 round magazine. He wants to get a few "Reliable" Hi Cap mags for it. What brands are good?

Mini's are a bit picky about magazines, and so many aftermarket mags are low quality. PMI is the only one I know to be reliable in the Mini-14. If MecGar makes magazines for the Mini, they'd be good too. They make a lot of the factory magazines for gun manufacturers. Thermolds are supposed to be reliable, but I've never seen one so I don't know how easy they are to find. Supposedly Promag's polymer copy of the Thermold works ok as a range mag, but I haven't tried them yet. I wouldn't want to trust it for serious purposes though.

Ruger makes a reliable magazine for the Mini ;)

Heh, but seriously, PMI is probably one of the better manufactureres for Mini's.

Here are the only mags I can recommend. These are Ruger factory mags.

Unfortunately, they are sold out at Eagle Firearms but I still posted it so you could see what you would be looking for. BTW, Eagle Firearms is a good place to shop and has established a great reputation (not affiliated with them, just wanted to let you know I was not sending you to a strange/shady site).

PMI is out of business. I don't know how long they have been, but quite awhile now. My Pro Mag metal 20 rounders have been durable and flawless since round one. They're currently well into the thousands now and still running as expected. They were about $17 at Academy Sporting Goods chains last time I checked.

I've had very good experience with the Ram-Line 30-round polymer "Combo Mag" that fits the mini-14, AR-15, and AR-180. Also have a Triple K Brand 30-rounder that feeds perfectly.

Pro Mags didn't work for my mini (188-series Ranch Rifle). I think mini's may have some variation in the mag release height, so you may have to experiment.

The only difference between my Pro-Mags and my factory Ruger magazine is the Pro-Mags dont have the Ruger logo on the bottom. Steel thickness, bends, cuts, follower, even the welds are in the identical locations.

I think mine are JMT, but don't hold me to it.

They're a bit finnicky to get properly loaded into the mag well, but I've never had a failure to feed from the magazine, once it's in there correctly. Bit expensive, though.
