Savage missed having a really good by offering folding side charging handles only on their 308 AR.

th

They should also offer it on their 5.56/223 MSR ARs. Not because an AR needs a folding side charging handle. But it would go a long way towards making a handy, California compliant, Mini 14 crushing carbine possible.

There are several work arounds to make AR rifles compliant with the California (and other less enlightened states) "assault weapon" bans and nearly all are ugly, clunky and just plain awkward to use. Stupid, because those bans don't impact crime at all. But there is one lower that that offers shooters and elegant solution that's compatible with most AR uppers and is compliant with all ban state laws with little to no modification. That is the Ares (now "Fightlite") SCR

A brilliant solution. The action spring is angled in the grip and the carrier has a rat tail, like the FN-FAL, so a tubular receiver extension isn't needed

The fly in the ointment is the AR charging handle. When the shooter is holding the SCR by the grip and runs the charging handle with the off hand. the charging handle will smack into the shooter's thumb. Awkward and potentially painful.

What does this have to do with the Savage MSR? If the MSR had the Savage folding side charger and was adapted to work with the SCR lower, shooters could operate the side charger without smacking their thumbs. An SCR with the a side charger upper would be the ultimate featureless carbine and a better alternative to running a Ruger Mini.

There are other side charger AR uppers available, but they are either not as well executed ans the Savage side charger, or are very pricey. I really want an SCR with a Savage side charger upper receiver. It would be perfect for the times I travel to California to shoot with family and friends. It would be fun rifle to have, period

MSRP for a stripped Spartan non reciprocating left side charger upper with NON-folding charging handle is $279. Not a complete solution and not economical.

The Savage upper is a better design and should be much less

$225 Not that bad of a price, when compared to any billet upper + quality charging handle.

"Machined from 6061 billet aluminum"

Negative, ghost rider.

At that price, they could have at least used a decent alloy. I wouldn't pay $20 for a 6061 upper. 6061 is what I use for soft vise jaws, or to put under a piece of quality material so I don't cut into my rotary table (or some other sacrificial piece). It has it's place, but not in guns.

I guess for me this is a big positive for our 2A friends living in the Anti-gun communist country of California (formerly the state of California) that can use the AR platform (if it still really that) and a big negative that anyone would have to go as far to skirt the never ending barrage of California laws and produce such things. In the end the Communist have once again created another way for our 2A friends to spend more money. I'm not happy that you guys have to result to this....:cuss:hope things get better....:(

Lol, ok :feet:, how about this one then? http://www.chandlerhardwoods.com/product-p/ar15-ur-sc.htm

Hahaha. Better!

Side chargers don't do anything for me, but at least they used the correct alloy!

6061 is 45% weaker than 7075, and not nearly as hard. Frankly, I don't know why anyone would mess with it when the weldability and higher corrosion resistance in natural finish aren't needed (hard anodizing pretty much mitigates the corrosion issue). It's a little bit cheaper, but it machines like crap compared to 2000 and 7000 series. When you're selling an upper for $230, the $5 difference in material cost is nothing.
