I forgot to cock the hammer before breaking the gun down.

I realised this when the trigger assembly came out and the hammer was up.

I just pushed it back to the cocked postion with my finger until it clicked, and then put the ejector into the correct place.

Does this matter, or might I have damaged something?

It should be fine.

The only way you could hurt anything is by dry-firing it with it out of the gun.
That might allow the hammer to damage the housing if the bolt wasn't there to stop it.

you can test with an empty casing from your last range trip, to see if the FP is making a good dent in the brass.

Don't pull the bullet, dump the powder, and try to burn out the primer compound to make an empty, it is amazingly loud and you'll lose the casing when it rockets away anyway.
Trust me on this. Dig through your range stuff and there is always a .22 casing or two.

One note...when taking a 10/22 apart....remember to center the safety button so you don't tear up the wood as it passes through the stock hole. I see several stocks with scuffs and dents right near the safety from guys trying to yank parts through holes were they don't fit.

Cheers
Mac.
