I have loaded 15,000 rounds of .45acp on my SDB now.
There are three brands of brass I settled on as my go-to brass.
They are Federal (LP+SP), Magtech(CBC), and Winchester.
CBC is my favorite because of the way it `feels` when sizing, priming, and bullet seating. After 21 reload cycles they resize well, the primer pockets are still tight, and the neck tension is still really good.
I also have a few thousand range pickups that I hate to waste.
It`s a mix of Aguila, Blazer, Hornady, RP, and several others.
I am pretty sure they are once-fired. I have cleaned and push-thru sized them.
Is there any negative to loading mixed bras other than the flare varying some with the different lengths?
What else should I watch for?
Thanks!

If your using a powder check die, mixed head stamps will/can cause the check die to vary. No negative just another variable, as you know different mfg brass have a slightly different feel. Some brass/bullet combos will give you low to marginal neck tension.

I have loaded mixed brass .45 since starting. I don't trim and have never had an issue. I even load the steel GI zinc/cadmium coated stuff from the War era. I don't even look at headstamps. Small primers are the only annoyance.

I ran into some .45 brass with crimped pockets a while back, pain in the butt. (forget the headstamp)
(I hand prime so not a big deal, but would be a pain if priming on press using a progressive)

I will remove crimps from .223/5.56 but the crimped pistol cases go into the recycle can.
The only good thing about crimped primers IMO is that it's pretty safe to assume the brass really is once fired.

Other than SP/LP I don't sort .45 pistol brass by headstamp.
I'm sure it might make a difference but I don't know if I could shoot the difference.

Hey!
Anyone that is annoyed by the Small Pistol Primer 45ACP brass can send them my way:thumbup:
I'll be happy to give them a home:)

I’m separating LP and SP brass after cleaning and saving the SP for loading some time in the future. When would that be? Who knows. I have a bias for LP ACP because it uses the same shell plate as .308 so change over is easy

I think it’s wise

WHEN primers are hard to get the next time we have a full blown panic it’ll give you flexibility so you can use what you find and not go too deep into your supply.

I have near a thousand SP brass.
I am going to reload .38spl soon, so I will be using SP primers for more than one caliber.
The change-overs will be easy.

I am sure if I was good enough that all the same headstamp brass would shoot a wee bit better, but I cannot shoot the difference in .38 Spl sorted (New Starline) vs non sorted, I also cannot shoot the difference in .45 ACP sorted (Brand new Starline) and not sorted. I certainly tried. Maybe from a Ransom Rest it would show up on target.

I’m with you
I don’t get people saying they’ll toss SPP brass
I’ll take all anyone wants to get rid of

As I’ve posted several times, I see having SPP and LPP brass as a good thing even if sorting it can be a pain.

You are probably right Walkalong, but it makes me feel better to eliminate some of the variables.
The only problem with that is that I don't have anything to blame but my OGEs
(Old Guy's Eyes) and lack of skills.
It's still fun though!!

I'll likely have a red dot on a 1911 as soon as I find a sight and mount combo I like.
I've been thinking about it for a while now.
BTW- Good shooting!

I carry a bag of them in my range bag. I toss a few here and there in my buddies brass when they aren't looking....lol

Walkalong, looks like your .45 likes those ACME 175gr SWCs!

I don't want to hijack the thread, but as long as we are talking about different primer sizes in 45 acp, I want o ask, are there any other cartridges where manufacturers don't use a consistent primer size?

I just branched out into 10mm, and 38/357 mag will be coming soon. I didn't care for the surprise with 45 acp.

Me too, once someone has gone through the work of picking them up and sorting them I’ll take either small or large. Heck even if you accidentally picked up other calibers and had to sort them out, I might be interested in them too. PM me for an address if you want to get rid of them. :)

This was the last device I built to sort them though.
