Mixed Primers?

In my reloading I try very hard to make sure components are exact for any batch of reloads I make. I just purchased a couple of boxes of Remington .243 from Walmart this weekend and after opening the box found they had used to different types (colors) of primers in the same lot. In over 40 years of hunting I have never seen a box of ammo contain 2 different primers. This isn't a complaint, I just found it a bit odd. There were 5 silver primers and 15 gold in this box.

That is really odd!

With the recent primer shortage, Remington must have taken to using up the floor sweepings.

Or somebody at Wally-world was playing with the ammo.
Or someone returned a box after mixing two together at home?

I would inspect it really close for any evidence of reloads.
I might even call Remington Customer Service and ask them about it.

I've had that happen on a box of Winchester ammo before also. They all fired to same point of aim. Most stores will not let you return ammo, so I wouldn't expect reloads.

I've got two different boxes of 1000 Winchester large rifle primers. One is from the white box with the orange and red stripe days and the other is a newer bluish box. In the white box, all of the primers are silver in color. In the newer box, all of the primers are brass colored. I assume the box of loaded ammo I got with the mixed primers were from a lot around the time of the transition.

To my knowledge however, Remington has always used brass colored primers. Some of the reloaders who have been doing this longer than I have may know better, though.
 
Most stores will not let you return ammo
Try the returns counter at Wally-world.

Your mileage my vary depending on which girl is on the desk, and how long the line is.

regardles of store policies,I'd inspect them for sizing die marks,etc. weigh one against the other and see if they vary a lot.all ammo will vary some of course,but a lot will mean there is something wrong .

I suspected this too when I first noticed them but they would have had to go through a lot of work to do this as the box was sealed with glue on the flaps of both ends. I just opened another box that I purchased at the same time and they are the same. This time 7 silver and 13 gold primers. I'm not really concerned about how they shoot as I bought them primarily to sight in a new rifle and acquire some fire formed cases for reloading. I may give Remington a call just to see what they have to say about it.

I'm a little less confident about these not being reloads than I was 5 minutes ago. After a closer examination, I found scrape marks on 2 and dings up around the neck (ejection dings?) on 2 more of the rounds with silver primers. Still believe this to be done at Remington as the box flaps were definitely sealed on both of these boxes. I am definitely going to ask Remington about this now. It's not that I would mind shooting their ammo from used brass but at least they ought to let us know if this is what they are doing.
 
Mystery solved! I called Remington and it seems the primers that are silver colored are so because of a graphite coating they use to lubricate the machinery when making either the primers or the assembling the ammo. Fellow suggested I take an eraser and try rubbing it off and the primer will turn gold. Said I wasn't the only one that had inquired about this and they are trying to fix the problem. He said the scrapes and dings in the brass were just machine marks and that they definitely do not use used brass in loading their ammo. I tried the eraser and sure enough the primers turned gold.

I'm glad you contacted Remington and got a satisfactory answer. I guess I won't be too worried if it happens to me now, thanks for the great heads-up...
