A 17-year-old boy shot his mother’s boyfriend in a south Minneapolis residence early Sunday, then ran down the street and opened fire on the next person he saw, killing both, police say.

Justin James Hanks was in police custody this afternoon after Bloomington police arrested him at the Mall of America in a homicide case that is puzzling police.

Just before 2 a.m. the teen apparently fired a shotgun at his mother’s boyfriend during an argument. Then he ran out of the house and down the street, opening fire on a man who was walking with his girlfriend, police say.

"The suspect allegedly killed his (mother's boyfriend) and then fled the residence, and then, apparently, was involved in a second shooting with an unrelated person," said Minneapolis Police Capt. Mike Martin, adding he had never seen a case quite like this one.

Authorities were not releasing the names of the victims, pending notification of relatives.

But police provided the following account of the fatal shootings, roughly 15 minutes apart:

About 1:49 a.m., police were dispatched to a shooting inside a home at 1113 E. 28th St. When officers arrived, they found an adult man dead. He had been shot at least once. Witnesses inside the home identified Hanks as the suspect.

About 2:02 a.m., a man walking with his girlfriend was fatally shot at East 26th Street and 12th Avenue South — just blocks from the first shooting scene.

The teen was on the loose for another 13 hours before police got a tip that he was at the megamall in Bloomington. He was taken in to custody about 1:30 p.m.

I turned to my fairly anti wife and said, "That's why I carry every day."

And I got no argument back!

Progress...

Wife and I saw that on the 10pm news last night. I told her that was why I carry always, and thought she should, too. She does have her permit, but does not carry very often. I think I'm slowly convincing her, though.
