MOA used for sighting in

Ok, my question, (and first post) is....

When zeroing your scope at 100yd, approximately how many MOA up from the bottom of your elevation turret are you?

I checked my Monarch on my 243, which has 36 MOA total adjustment. On a 0 MOA base, and Med rings, I am 15 moa from bottoming out, leaving me approximately 21 MOA of positive elevation adjustment.

When looking for another scope for another gun, (300win mag) I realize that I will use up some of the total MOA adjustment sighting the gun in.

Is around 15 MOA of loss what I should account for?

I will be shooting a 180gn ballistic silvertip around 3000fps which will need 26.1 MOA to get it to 1000 yards.

the scope I'm looking at will have 50MOA total adjustment

I just wanted to know how much MOA I will burn up zeroing @100.

Won't it pretty much be the same across the board?

I didn't think the trajectory of the round really mattered. a .223 shooting a 50gn vmax drops about 1.5in from muzzle to 100yd. that is about the same drop for the 300win mag using my bullet, and I assume the majority of hi powered rifles drop about the same amt from 0 to 100yds, it's when you get out farther that the trajectory differences start to appear.

Yeah, I realize that, I'm just wanting to know how much MOA I will initially burn up, so that way I will be able to figure out how much usable adjustment I will have to work with before using a canted base.
 
w103tws, On my .300 Win Mag with a Leupold Mark 4 scope (8.5-25x), Badger Ordnance 20 MOA one-piece base, Leupold Mark 4 medium rings, a 208gr A-MAX bullet and a 100 yard zero I have -22 MOA and +62 MOA of adjustment for elevation. Given a bullet drop of 300" at 1000 yards and a 100 yard zero, I'd need +29 MOA of adjustment. According to Hornady's ballistics calculator, you'd need about the same with a 180 grain bullet with an MV of 3000fps (BC = 0.480). With a 0 MOA base and a 100 yard zero, my scope would have -42 MOA and +42 MOA which would still be ok for me to 1000 yards but I'd be wasting A LOT of adjustment. Your new scope with 50 MOA of vertical adjustment and a 0 MOA base might be a problem. I'd DEFINITELY go with a 20 MOA base with that scope.

BTW, with the 208 a-max, are you able to seat the rounds into the internal magaziine?

We just made up a load with those in my buddies Savage 110FP 300win mag. We started seating them to Hornady's specifications, but were getting about 1.5in groups. The farther we seated them, the tighter the groups got. Right now we are a few thousandths from the rifling and getting touching groups, but they are too long to sit in the magazine. Those A-max's have an awesome BC, and really hit hard.

I have an Accuracy International Chassis System (AICS) stock with detachable 5 round magazines so COL isn't a problem. I'm seating the 208gr A-MAX bullet 0.020" off the lands (for now) with a COL of 3.578". Once I get the "best" load with those specs, I'll start moving the bullet closer to the lands to see if the groups improve. I just replied on another thread and showed the five targets that I shot yesterday using the OCW method and the A-MAX (if you're interested).
